Leaf Rumours

Lets assume they all get top dollar that totals up $21.5M which leaves $16.725M in cap space, more then enough to sign both Franson and Kadri plus room to sign a mid ranged UFA.

Yeah, except you would need more than Franson, Kadri and a mid ranged UFA. Only 12 players would be signed. And that is only if the cap actually goes up $8 million, which is far from a sure thing.

The fact is if Gardiner, Kadri, Franson and Reimer all do what they have been doing you can't afford to pay them all what they are worth. Thats why taking advantage of these long term deals this offseason would have been so beneficial for our cap situation moving forward.

Having Kadri and Franson signed long term to 2nd line deals as first liners, is cap savings that you'll never be able to get back. And that is how you win in this league now. With cap savings. If you have to pay everyone what they are worth, or more, you won't have the depth to win.

I fail to see how it screws us, I just added up the guys who have contracts next year and there is $31.775M tied up in cap space, if the cap goes up to 70 million like many people are predicting then leaves $38.225M to work with.

Key guys that need to be signed next year: Riemer, Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner. Guys like Kessel and Phaneuf are likely going to command $6.5-7M, Gardiner (depending on how he preforms this year) will likely ger $3.5-4M, Reimer in the hood of $2.9-3.5M. Lets assume they all get top dollar that totals up $21.5M which leaves $16.725M in cap space, more then enough to sign both Franson and Kadri plus room to sign a mid ranged UFA.

Kessel is going to need at minimum 7.5 to sign, Phaneuf likely around 7.

big waiting game going on around the league right now with RFAs. I'm guessing they're all waiting to see what the other does first, but somebody's gotta go first.

C Stepan
C Kadri
C Hodgson
C Henrique
W Nyquist

D Pietrangelo
D Franson

Interestingly, most of these guys most likely feel, and could easily argue, that their careers and earning power have been delayed by their teams being over-patient with their development.

Pietrangelo likely feels that the Blues likely kept him in juniors an extra year just to save money, while guys like Kadri, Hogson, Nyquist, franson likely think their teams screwed them over by keeping them in the minors for so long.

What is better? (assuming a $70 million cap)

This:

Lupul (5.25) - Bozak (4.2) - Kessel (8)
JVR (4.25) - Kadri (4) - XXX
XXX - Bolland (3.5) - Kulemin (3.5)
Orr (0.925) - XXX - McLaren (0.7)

Gardiner (4) - Phaneuf (7)
Rielly (1.7) - Franson (4.5)
Gunnar (3.1) - XXX

Reimer (3.5)
Bernier (2.9)

Salary: $61.025
Cap space: $8.975
Roster size: 16

Or this:

Lupul (5.25) - Bozak (4.2) - Kessel (8)
JVR (4.25) - Kadri (6) - Clarkson (5.25)
XXX - Bolland (3.5) - Kulemin (3.5)
Orr (0.925) - XXX - McLaren (0.7)

Gardiner (4) - Phaneuf (7)
Rielly (1.7) - Franson (5.5)
Gunnar (3.1) - XXX

Reimer (3.5)
Bernier (2.9)

Salary: $69.275
Cap space: $0.725
Roster size: 17

In the second one you can't keep everyone, or improve. And that is assuming someone just takes Liles. And if a legit first line center like Joe Thornton happens to become available you have no room for him.

Its not even close IMO.

Dude, enough with the Clarkson. He's signed, get over it. We're not unsigning him.

We will find the space for this year, no question, and we'll have plenty of room next year.

Everyone agrees, now is the ideal time to sign Kadri and Franson to long term deals. But they're being unreasonable. They've both only had one good, shortened season. And one disappeared for the end of the regular season and the playoffs. They both should sign for around $4M. The fact that we haven't signed one means that they're both probably asking for around $5M.

That number needs to go down. And they're probably just waiting for it to, as the season draws near.

I know we have him, and we are stuck with him. It was just a shitty signing that cost us a ton of cap flexibility in both the short term and the long term and will force the Leafs to make tough decisions that they didn't have to make. And frankly considering the player is totally inexcusable.

They can't afford to sign them both for $4 million now. They can't even really afford to sign one of them for $4 million unless they want to trade the other one.

Which is really too bad. Because those kinds of savings would have been amazing in a cap world.

Nonis made Clarkson, Bozak and Bernier the priorities over Kadri and Franson. Simple as that.

Remains to be seen whether he can still come to terms with Kadri and Franson.

Also remains to be seen if making them a priority was a great idea in the first place.

GOOD GOD, its a full on Fred Festival. He didn't figure on the fact that no one in the entire NHL will take Dion Phaneuf off his hands. Do you REALLY think he wants to piss off Franson and Kadri? Really?

No one wants him at 6.5. No one. And he is NOT going to sign for 7 million, not after what every sophisticated hockey observer saw from him in game seven.

It all comes down to Liles, and Kadri and Franson being reasonable.

If Liles can be dealt somehow, then Kadri and Franson can each get the $4M or so that they are entitled to, and story over.

If Liles is truly untradeable, maybe they use a regular buyout on him (which would be horrible) and dump Fraser on someone.

There are ways to get both these guys signed. It's not undoable, and bringing aboard another potential Roberts or Clark didn't take up the entire $64M cap and wasn't a bad move.

Pretty sure the window to buy out Liles has passed, i.e. we're stuck with him unless we trade him.

Have to agree with leafman about Clarkson though. Or I guess Clarkson + Bozak. Either way, we could easily have a much more ideal cap situation moving forward, which would be nice considering all of our best players save for Lupul and JVR are either RFAs, UFAs to be, or RFAs to be.

I don't know if it's that simple.

UFA day is July 1, RFA day is....whenever.

It has to be pretty close to that simple. There is a bit of uncertainty as to the amount of money you may throw at a UFA that you want - but it should be capped and that cap should be known about well in advance.

If Nonis wasn't thinking steps ahead to see how his UFA signings were going to affect his key RFA's in Kadri and Franson then we all have a problem as leafs fans.

Lupul will never re sign while Randy Carlyle is the coach.

Discuss.
