Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Difference is Danford is a very good skater.

I’ll admit I know next-to-nothing about Dernferd other than what his hockeydb profile shows.

I just assume that the big D picked by Treliving who can barely even put up any points as a 20 year-old in junior hockey is going to be a bust.

Also generally assume anytime we select a “low-ceiling” player with a 1st rounder than they’re going to be a bust, like Stuart Percy, Tyler Biggs & Freddie the Goat.

not even really that big!

looks like the KHL has fallen below the AHL as a league.

Not surprising. Russian oligarchs don’t have the spare US dollars to lure non-Russians from the AHL & European leagues like they used to.

And even at the best of times, it was often a shit-show for players to get their mafia/oligarch team owners to pay them what they were promised. I’d imagine it’s orders of magnitude worse now.

Then why doesn't he skate with the puck?

he's certainly able from what i've seen. obviously highlight packages are skewed towards offensive incidents but watch any video on him and he's very fluid and comfortable skating with the puck.

and i know i've read that when he was traded this year his new team deployed him as an ultra-tough usage matchup dman.

so it might just be a question of "doesn't" instead of "can't".

this vid here has a bunch of throwaway highlights that are just wristers from the blueline and such, but there's still a bunch of him skating very effectively with the puck:

I watched him at the world Juniors in one game and based my entire scouting report on that. He was a bit of a grenade chucker under pressure and I didn't see much of him skating his way out of pressure with the puck. He was having a tough go of things and the opposition was constantly trying to get their best players on against his pairing to create that mismatch.

Sample size: part of 1 singular wjc game. So dyor.

more like canadian coaches were putting him out there against the other team's best players, much like his CHL teams do on his way to being named best defensive dman.

I'm all-in on Sham Langford and hope he can make the team next year. Would be if he's a 6/7. Give him like 40-50 games to wet his feet.

Full season of mid pairing or tougher usage in the AHL pls.

Non elite prospect 20 yr old defenders don't make the NHL very often. Only 1 20 yr old defender played more than 20 games for a playoff team this season, and he was a 6th overall pick.

Especially when the dude is probably going to be a defensive specialist with very limited puck moving ability when he gets to the show, let's bring him along after he's shown he can chew up heavy defensive usage against AHL level top competition. No need to rush him when we have other more advanced guys in the org like Villeneuve and Chadwick that we should be giving a look for the 6/7 type roles.

I'd take him as the 6/7 if he's good enough to hang in limited sheltered action. Sick of kids not getting any burn in favor of Tyler Myers and Chris Benoit. If other teams don't give them a chance either, it doesn't mean they're right about that.

sure give villeneuve a #6/#7 slot and have a Chadwick-Danford pair getting all the minutes in the AHL and be first callups. i'm good with that.

i even like some of the other young marlies like Sharpe and Smith and those 2 ncaa kids we just signed.
