Misc 2018 Playoff News Thread

So, yeah ...

Washington finally gets over the hump and into the Conference Finals with that perilous 2-1 OT win over the Pens. That game was totally different than Game 5. Tight checking, positional, both teams very disciplined ... whereas Game 5 was a freak show with both teams trying to behead people, leading to an endless parade of odd man rushes. Hey ... tip your cap, because Washington figured out a way to win both kinds of game. Better team in this series won, and Trotz made all the right moves behind the bench.

Nashville opened up a can of Forsberg to beat the Jets 4-0 and extend that series to Game 7. He was dominating with a capital everything while the best D in hockey threw a wet blanket over the Jets in the offensive zone. Nashville needed to step up big, and they did. Game 7 should be a doozy.

I will be interested to see how Washington responds to making it past Pittsburgh and into the ECF. I have a feeling that that series win may have ended up being their Stanley Cup and I see Tampa blowing through them in 5 games. Tampa is loaded with talent and depth.

Out West, I am pulling for Nashville in game 7 and overall rooting for Tampa and Nashville in the finals. That would be a fun series to watch.

To be fair, Tampa is just a heck of a lot better and more balanced than Washington, so they could well chop them down quickly even if Washington plays well.

Out west, I feel like the Nashville/Winnipeg winner might have left too much on the ice to handle Vegas' pace of play. If Flower holds up in net, the Knights might be annoying the league patriarchy all the way to the Finals. If not, then Nashville is probably a better bet to snuff out the Cinderella story. The best defense in the league has a way of doing stuff like that after all.

The Pens finally ran out of gas and succumbed to the Stanley Cup hangover x 2...they looked battered and bruised and generally exhausted in game 6, but full marks for a wild ride the past 3 seasons.

The Caps beating Tampa in the ECF would be a huge upset from where I sit, Tampa is deeper than deep, the young kids on that team like Point, Sergachev, Chirelli are fantastic...the talent and skill and depth is built for a Cup. Bolts in 5!

Preds came so close last year, it would be nice to see them knock off the Jets and then beat Vegas for another Cup Finals berth.

I'd like to see that too, but I fear that by the time they got to the Finals, the Preds might have absolutely nothing left in the tank. It's a freaking gauntlet to run in the west.

Clearly you've never played beer league hockey, where cropdusting the opposing netminder is a time-honored tradition!

Must be terrible on something like burritos Tuesday

Damn, I don’t eve want to think how long it’s been since I took a shot.

Can't wait to watch the awarding of the highly coveted 'Canes Cup tonight. Who will win it? Peter Laviolette or Paul Maurice?

The Jets will bounce back from that poor showing, but if they can't contain Forsberg better then it won't matter. I'm leaning Nashville as well.

Want a reminder that Peter Laviolette is a good coach? How about having the guts to pull Rinne 11 minutes into the first period after some craptastic goaltending? Of course it helps when your backup is good....

Like Irbe and Weekes in '02?

Well, Mo won the Canes Cup in a convincing manner. Preds just didn't have it tonight and the Jets were prepared and loaded for bearcat. 5-1 final.

That western conference final is going to be balls to the wall fun to watch. Fast, physical and likely a battle of attrition-- everything you want in playoff hockey!
