New Canadian Politics Thread

Francois Legault is pulling his best DeSantis/Abbott impression and demanding that asylum seekers at the Quebec border be shuttled off to other provinces.

Presumably he’s worried about allowing non-whites and/or non-Francophones into the province after all the effort he’s spent trying to drive out those undesirables.

Only in Quebec are you allowed to both be openly racist, and also extremely indignant when called out about being openly racist.

Actually, I take it back. That applies to most of America.

Yep.

Recent example of that was that federal anti-Islamophobia representative that was forced to make a grovelling apology to the Bloc & Legault for calling out Quebec’s obviously racist Bill 21 as racist, after the massive indignant outcry from Quebec.

That was an embarrassing & repugnant display.

sure was. her comments were so fucking reasonable too.

like, you can be racist, fine. but don't get all high and mighty when you are rightfully (and respectfully!) called out on it. that's when we move from the evidently bullshit argument about 'muh freedoms' to the whole 'I'm going to impose my view of things on you, and you better shut up and deal with it'

also, unrelated, but on my mind.

was listening to a podcast yesterday, the topic was gun control. podcast host is very anti-gun, like I am. his listeners are surprisingly pro-gun, so he brought on a gun guy to have a chat. gun guy is some lawyer. I went into it with as open a mind as possible.

my conclusion is that these fucking 'gun rights' bozos in Canada are so absolutely full of fucking shit, dear lord. either the guy who was on the podcast is a terrible representative and spokesperson, or the whole push is gaslighting bullshit.

I went in expecting to learn why my views on guns and gun control were city-centric and out of touch, and I left feeling even more strongly anti-gun.

There's no rational pro gun argument in a modern world. It's telling that the only real argument for them in the US is muh constitution, muh (purposely poorly defined) freedom, muh jesus.

More guns = more shootings, full stop. The Aussies data shows all that we need to see imo. They changed one fucking variable in their society and saw a massive drop in gun related crimes of all types.

And I've always said if I ever moved back to Canada it sure as shit wouldn't be Quebec.

I have to disagree somewhat. There's no rational pro gun argument with irrational people. There's a difference. There are far more responsible gun owners than irresponsible ones. Far far more.

But they ruin it for you, and then you all pay into an organization that makes it politically impossible to isolate them and get guns out of their hands.

So you all lose.

No argument there. The frustrating part is I think if this was a referendum and stricter policies were on the ticket then they would lose. The USA doesn't do referendums because they're afraid of the real voice of the people.

yeah the data speaks clearly and overwhelmingly.

buddy on the podcast had no real arguments to rely on really, just various gaslighting, tropes, and other BS.

somehow the narrative has gone totally off the rails in America.

the constitution obviously permits reasonable gun control, but nobody seems to be having that conversation properly or in any depth

It's too late now....

My favourite excuse.

Exactly and I'm ready to have that discussion and I am an enthusiast. Many of my shooting buddies feel the same. Licensing, stricter controls, checks etc are a must. I would also make people get licensed and have to pay every two years for a renewal. Charge like $150 and they will lose their shit but if you multiplied $150 x all the gun owners? That is a shit ton of money to help pay for better training for cops and damages from shootings.

If your license is lapse you get fined and lose your gun. Simple as that.

Of course that'll never fly here in never never land

Maybe hold on to your guns for the upcoming Civil War 2.0

Or insurance. Just if insurance was required it would be a huge step forward. Don't like government telling you what to do? Fine, let private industry tell the individual that they're too much of a risk to own a firearm when no one will insure them.
