Opt-out clauses are the stupidest thing in baseball. Why teams hand those options out is beyond ridiculous because no matter what, it's a lose-lose situation. If the guy plays lights out for the next 4 years, he's going to obviously opt-out and sign for even MORE money. Or he's gonna tank it and be massively over-paid for the next 7 years.
Yeah, they're dumb but lots of top guys seem to be getting them lately.
From today's conference call:
When asked about the opt-out clause in the final contract, Cashman made sure to tell everyone that it wasn't his idea. It was not in their initial offer, but Casey Close told him that it was an important component and was present in a lot of the other pitches. To him, it seemed like it was mandatory to have it included if they still wanted a chance to sign him.

_____
Upgrades Needed:
• Bullpen — could still see a few additions here.
• Right-handed hitting infielder — who's left? Michael Young, Jeff Baker, etc.
_____
Other notes:
• I really hope Cashman can find a new home for Ichiro. There's really no place on the team for him. You don't want to sink $6.5 million into a bench guy who will mostly be used as a defensive replacement/pinch runner. It would be great if they could get a decent bullpen arm and only have to eat half of that salary.
• What to do with Brett Gardner? I sense they will keep him and he will be the everyday left fielder.
• What to do with Eduardo Nunez? Right now he's penciled into a bench role but I can see him starting the year in Triple-A. Still holding out hope Cashman can find a better right-handed hitting platoon partner for Kelly Johnson at third base.
Grant Balfour agrees to a deal with the Rays — two years, $12 million.
Too bad, would have liked to see him in pinstripes. Sounds likely David Robertson is going to be the closer though, Yankees are probably looking for setup-types.

The Yankees' biggest remaining issue is an uncertain infield, and while their iconic shortstop Derek Jeter will be the shortstop provided he's healthy, second base and third base aren't completely settled. Drew could possibly be used at second base, if signed, with an eye on moving to shortstop if Jeter doesn't prove healthy. The Yankees have previously signed Brian Roberts, who has been penciled in at second base, plus Kelly Johnson, who should get significant time at third base. Eduardo Nunez is a holdover.
According to the team, Masahiro Tanaka will wear number 19.
_____
pinstripealley: Hopefully the Yankees have taken great lengths to make sure all of Chris Stewart's suck has been removed so it doesn't wear off on Tanaka.

There's been some talk about the Yankees taking a look at Emilio Bonifacio, who was DFA'd by the Royals today.
He stunk the past two years (79 and 71 wRC+ respectively) but could be an option to join the backup infield competition between Nunez, Anna, Sizemore, etc.

Andrew Marchand: Source: Yanks still not interested in Drew.
There has been some Internet chatter that in light of the Derek Jeter retirement news, the Yankees may go after Stephen Drew. The idea is that Drew could play second and third base this year and then become Jeter's replacement in 2015. As a hypothesis goes, it is not terrible. However, a source told ESPN New York the Yankees still aren't interested in Drew.
It didn't sound as if they were going to change their minds, either. (LINK)
This just doesn't make sense — the Yankees clearly need an upgrade in the infield and all it would cost is money + a second-round draft pick.
Would love for management to change their minds, but sadly, doesn't sound like it's gonna happen.
