Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

The NHL Tonight guys have talked about the Oilers probably moving RHN a lot this postseason. He just seems like the odd man out as Yakupov won't net the return they need and the view the other forward as more valuable. The consensus was Draisaitl just jumps to center and replaces RHN.

I think it is more than a consensus. He played like a #1 center for the most part, still room to improve.

Yup. Guys like that build momentum with trade possibilities that often exist only in their heads. Happens to two or three guys every summer. Most of whom stay exactly where they are.

Could be worse ... in England the soccer press sell of 20 guys a week, who also end up going nowhere.

“I’d be really hard-pressed to see them trading Faulk. I think he’s a really good young defenseman. You never say never, for the right fit. But I still think even though they have Hanifin, and they’ve got Slavin, and they’ve got some young defensemen they’re really excited about, and they still have veteran guys like Hainsey and what have you; I still find it difficult that if you get yourself a defenseman like Faulk, a puck-mover who’s smart and skilled and all of those things – those guys are hard to find. Just ask the Edmonton Oilers, because they’re looking for one. And if you’ve got one, I’d be surprised if they’re eager to part with one."

- Bob McKenzie

Me, too. Just like Edmonton needs a top-pairing right shot defenseman, so do we.

And as stocked as we seem to be with defenseman prospects, none of the right-shots (Pesce, Murphy, McKeown) look like top-pairing material...at least not yet.

Now, on the left-shot side, we might could talk. More depth there than on the right side.

Well outside of Faulk, there's not much we have to offer unless they want young then I would be willing to give up Fleury and say Lindholm for RNH.

But would rather stand pat unless a deal comes our way that is out of this world. Maybe we had that already and it's done. (Tera and Bick)

I haven't done the math just yet, but those that have say there's room for a big salary just to get to our usual spending level.

And that's after signing Rask and filling the 13th forward (Nash?) and 7th D-man slots.

So let's all think happy thoughts...like Okposo happy thoughts.

*does the math*

Okay, 9 forwards currently signed and on the roster for around $24M.

Add Rask, probably Aho, and maybe Nash and we would have 12 forwards for $29M or so.

6 D-men signed at $13M. 2 goaltenders at $6M. That's a minimum roster of 20 skaters for $48M.

Could quit at the cap floor ($51M?) by adding a depth 13th forward and a 7th defenseman.

Or add one major forward talent and still be below last season's $60M salary budget.

PK may have some cash flow issues. But I don't see us quitting at the cap floor.

And, perhaps more importantly, it's not just cap hit, but real money.

So Semin's check would put us just over the cap floor without making a big move.

But also leaves room for a major-league salary player if inclined to fund the salary budget at the usual Canes level of around $60M.

Any talk of trading Faulk for ANY forward from Edmonton is just silly. Francis can't be that stupid. Faulk is one of the best d-men in the league right now. Edmonton doesn't have the talent to make that trade.

Probably. Terry, like Nash, proved himself to be versatile enough for a depth role. They just have to do whatever it takes to get guys like that out of the top nine.

Agreed.

I want a third line that's more like: Aho / Teravainen / Lindholm

I mean, now we're talking a true "can't handle this" scoring third line.

Not just three skaters that can manage to survive a NHL shift against third pairings and other borderline-AHL third lines.

Let's not get carried away. Lindholm took a big step backward last year for goal scoring, going from 17 to 11. Teravainen had 13 goals and Aho turns 19 next month. Can they be a "can't handle this" scoring line. Yes. But let's manage expectations a bit.

OK. Managing expectations then ... that line will be a friggin pain in the butt to play against for the vast majority of NHL teams who have burned most of their cap space on their first pairing and their first line and thus run a bunch of grinders out and call them a third line. You know. The way the Canes have done the last few years. Even if they don't score, they all have enough skill to be a real handful ... and to tempt opponents to shift their checking assignments.

Of course, THAT would mean cobbling together an actual first line ... a job as yet unfinished. Find a big boy winger to play with Skinner and Rask and we might actually be within grasping distance of some balance for the first time in about 7 years.

The big boy winger JB talks about might not be that hard to find if Francis was willing to wade into the UFA waters...there actually are quite a few decent options for big boy wingers that can play a regular shift and contribute offensively. Troy Brouwer, Milan Lucic, Matt Martin, Jason Chimera...I consider any of those guys to be exactly what the Canes forward mix could use on the wing.

Lucic is likely way out of the Canes price point...but one of Martin, Chimera and perhaps Brouwer could be had.

Boy... I think everyone in Canesland would be really happy to have Lucic on a line with Skins. A lot of the crap he puts up with would just stop.

True.

I also like Okposo. But think he might draw too much in the open market for us to have a chance.
