Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

Lucic is on a pretty steeply downward career arc, so I wouldn't discount anyone who remains interested in the guy. He has slowed noticeably and was a borderline pylon at his best.

Reportedly Philly are after him ... but you know how those "reports" go.

Overpriced pylon.... Pretty much sounds like a Flyers move to me.

I'm not much into Lucic and not sure he's worth much since he really can't play like he did before. I'd rather go for someone younger and in their prime.. Okposo would be a nice piece to land and probably would mix in well with the lot.

Okposo is pretty much the same age is Lucic. That said, I think the game of Okposo is more what the NHL is heading toward with speed and skill. Lucic is the type of forward who is probably losing value as teams copy the Penguin model.

Okposo is going to be paid BIG come July. After Stamkos, I think he and Louis Eriksson are the only real power guys left that are in their prime.

Looking at the list reminded me ... anybody think Carolina might make an offer to Jamie McGinn? IMO he's always been a bit under-utilized on fairly deep teams and could be a guy primed to step into a bigger role. And he likely wouldn't break the bank. If nothing else he's a big, gritty power winger who's probably good for 20+ goals in your top 9. He might be the kind of guy who could caddy for Skinner.

I did think of Jamie McGinn as a pretty good piece to add. He does seem to have some decent upside. But we'd still need to add a first line forward. Given a choice of only one add, Loui Eriksson would be my preference but would he even give us any real consideration. We here don't even see us as a playoff contender* and that is going to be a major factor as other teams are going to throw indecent cubic dollars at him as well as Stamkos and Okposo.

*We may make the playoffs next season but not likely to go very far.

Yeah ... no. Guys like Eriksson and Okposo (and probably Lucic given the way these thing normally go) will get over-paid by the big boys before the likes of Carolina even get a call back from their agent. We're going to have to go fishing in Pool B if we're looking free agents. That means guys with a bit of wear and tear on 'em or guys who haven't quite proven it yet. Get used to it.

I see the same arguments around here ... "not a perfect fit" ... "too old" ... "hasn't done much" ... all meaningless when you're as bad as we've been for as long as we have. You scout your little legs off and you find short term answers that are good ENOUGH fits and you move on down the road. We signed Semin exactly because he was seriously flawed. And if Jimmy had been smart, we would have gotten good value out of the guy over a short period of time. That's what you're hoping for in the secondary market.

They are two of the McGinn brothers in the NHL. The 3rd is Tye with the Bolts - all are left wingers. Brock is the youngest.

Isn't Ladd still unsigned?

He is, and I'm unsure of the market for him. He's 30 and coming off of a mostly scruffy season. He was kind of crap for Winnipeg but played very well indeed for Chicago after the trade. He then proceeded to have a pretty blah playoff run that saw him produce two skinny points in seven games. I just don't know where that leaves the guy, but I suspect he's pretty firmly in the middle of Pool B.

I'd say Carolina probably has a shot at him if they want to take it, barring a real contender falling in love with him. He's certainly a high character guy, and he handled being scapegoated pretty hard in Winnipeg well enough. The thing with Laddie is that he's never really scored like you want from a first line wing. You can only count on him for 20-something goals.

Saw an NHL.COM mock draft yesterday that had the Canes taking Tyson Jost at 13 and Julien Gauthier at 21...that to me would be the slam dunk two forwards with the greatest need for the Canes. One a skilled, playmaking center with great leadership qualities and the other a hulking, power winger with a sniper's touch around the net. It might be a stretch for Jost to be there at 13 unless there is a big run on defensemen after the first 5 forwards are picked.

Seems unlikely, but I think we would all be satisfied with that. I seriously doubt Jost will be there at 13 though. I think it's vastly more likely to have a run on centers in this draft than on D ... but you never know. If somebody of that quality slips I'd hope the Canes would be savvy enough to snap him up regardless of position.

And I like Gauthier at 21 a lot better than I like him at 13 ... especially if you've already taken a playmaking forward.

Agreed. First pick, if the best guy available come #13 is a playmaking forward - you draft him. And if Gauthier's still around at 21 and no better talent to draft in the Forward position - well you get yourself what appears to be a future hulking power forward.

I'm still calling a better than 25% chance Ronnie does something big and bold on draft day. I don't see us making picks at 13 and 21 when all is said and done.

Yeah, agreed. Maybe even a better chance. I mean, we have TWO 1st round picks. If he can parlay one in a package to move up. Yay.

Whatever he does, I just hope we end the day with a seriously skilled forward under our tree. If that's a vet, great. If it's a coupe of picks, fine. Just inject some more skill into this mix.
