Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

Toronto finished dead last in the league last year. If this were Europe, they wouldn't even be in the NHL right now. (That didn't come out quite right, but you know what I mean.) If Toronto is still a candidate, then pretty much any team is (except for Edmonton, of course, which has re-written the book on incompetence).

They did!? Had no idea...

The guys signing somewhere for 7 years and maybe I'm missing something but I'm not really seeing a whole lot of options for teams that both have the cap space and are a contender right now and look to remain that way. I mean, the best of those looks like Tampa but I gotta think there's a reason it's June 24th and he's not signed. So no, I don't think Toronto's out.

Bellows at 13 seems terrible, Bellows at 21 seems terrific. Everything out there would seem to have better players still there ahead of him at 13th overall...and the age old adage pick the best talent available!

The one kid that seems small and frail for his age but uber-skilled is Clayton Keller...those are the kids that are hard to project at 18 but if he fills out a bit he could end up being another Patrick Kane type of player.

Meh ... horses for courses. A team with Jeff Skinner on it might just not be the best fit for Bellows, but offense WILL be served and I don't think he'll slip as far as some of the mocks seem to think. He's a one dimensional player, but that dimension is burying the puck, and that's sort of how they keep score in this game.

And those scouting reports are all but identical to the ones on Skinner in his draft year, which is why I brought him up. A team can have too many of those guys, but every team needs one.

Roll call for the draft party at PNC Arena tonight? I'm pretty sure I'm going to head over there. If enough of us go, maybe we can do a brief meet-up.

I was thinking about it, but then ended up with evening meetings two nights in a row and a morning meeting on Saturday, so ... yeah. I'm going to watch from the couch.

Was planning on being there for sure, but my company scheduled big outing tonight at the Bulls game. So I'll be there, probably getting wet, and checking the board here for draft updates :)

After Toronto drafts Matthews tonight I would trade the Canes roster for their roster. They will have a ton of high end talent. The Canes are deeper with youth but it is harder to find true high end talent. Add Stamkos to the mix and they are a contender as soon as they tighten the D up and add forward depth within 2 years.

I think if Bellows is the best available at 21, I would draft him. But I think we'll have somewhat better options all assuming we draft at #13 before him.

I agree generally though, you cannot teach his skillset so easily. He likes to burry the puck, and remember, defense can be taught. Skinner has improved, like many in the NHL, you quickly learn you have to up the ante in all aspects of your game. At least improve. Or you better well produce enough to offset it (a la Karlsson in Ottawa)

I think the Shanaplan was expedited with the good fortune of the lottery pick and landing Matthews! If the ping pong balls would have bounced the other way perhaps the Leafs leave Bernier in net for another season and do not trade for Andersen and hope for another bottom 3 showing and another lottery pick.

The Stamkos mystery will soon tell the tale on what the Leafs do next in terms of how close they are to becoming a contender in the East.

The advantage Toronto has over Carolina in rebuilding is the market and the available budget. They can spend to the cap while re-building and the traditional market means they can always at least get a phone call back from a free agent's agent. Carolina has neither of those luxuries. We have to do it the hard way, and the hard way takes longer.

Anybody want to call their shot for tonight's proceedings?

Personally I've got a feeling we package up something to move up to 4 so we don't have to pick through the leftovers at 13.

I could be WAY off base, which would be fine. So long as we end up with quality I'm not that picky.

I'm expecting us to end up picking Puljujarvi at #3 or Tkachuk at #4. How we actually get to that point I'm not 100% sure of but I really am expecting Ronnie to go big here and grab us that elite forward talent.

I'm good with moving up to pick at third but at fourth? Nah, then I'd rather stay put and pick at 13 and 21.

It doesn't sound like we have enough to plan a meet-up, but I hope to run into Andy, Allen, Jack, etc. Since I don't think showing up in any of my Eric Staal jerseys makes sense, I'll probably be the guy rocking the old school Sami Kapanen sweater.

See you there...GO CANES!!!

Edmonton won't trade #4. Not going to happen. Why break tradition?

Columbus, Calgary or Vancouver though, might be persuaded.

1967 is a long time ago. I think the people of Toronto might argue about the hard way :)

Poor management is the great equalizer in the NHL, but I think Toronto might be on the right path finally.

My GUESS is that the price tag for 3 and 4 is too steep. I could see us moving up to like 7-8 to take whoever is left among Dubois, Nylander or Brown.
