OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Christ, people watch far too much tv. Life is not like the movies.
you hold a knife and refuse to put it down, then move towards the cops you will be put down.

The ones who call this shit out are ones who have zero experience with situations like this.

It's a tragedy for sure, probably preventable. Lessons will be learned.

Bingo.

The naïveté of the armchair critics - who would be the first to mercilessly critique the police had the man gone and stabbed someone sans police intervention - is tiresome.

The decision of any officer to unholster his weapon is not a decision made lightly, but when the threat poses an imminent or existential threat to that officer's safety the use of lethal force is justified, and that officer will be shooting to kill.

Anyone with a brain who doesn't think they're living in a 1970s fascist, third world junta still *cough* *cough* can easily comprehend that.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I can see this point. But to be fair, cops in the UK don't carry guns and they deal with knife wielders very regularly. They do fine generally by use of the taser.

Taser could have worked but due to both financial and PR reasons only sergeants and ETF members carry them.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

A perfect example where the middle force (a taser) would have been ideal.

Sadly people have worked themselves into a frenzy about that particular tool...pathetic.

In fairness, they've been grossly misused...a lot...by police forces in North America. They're replaced people skills as conflict resolution tools to too many cops in the U.S

Bull shit. Too many cops these days are absolute cowards. This was a skinny 18 year-old armed with a three-inch knife on an empty streetcar. Are you telling me a bunch or trained, armed police wouldn't be able to take him down with non-lethal force without one of them getting killed or seriously injured? The incident in Montreal, where their gutless puke cops unleashed a hail of gunfire at a homeless man with a small knife and ended up killing him and an innocent bystander also comes to mind.

Cops aren't cannon fodder. Nor are they cowards for bringing a gun to a knife fight. A knife is a lethal weapon, and can cause severe injury during a scuffle.

I'm not sure he was in a posistion to do damage once he was shot and on the ground........and they still fired 6 more. Then tased him.

Cops aren't like infallible or invulnerable to harm like David Dunn from the movie Unbreakable. They are simply ordinary human beings with a badge, a uniform, and a protective weapon designed to prevent harm from coming to them or others while performing the duties of their profession.

To act like they are supposed to put themselves at risk for the sake of a potentially volatile, unknown party's personal safety over theirs is downright silly. If a potentially lethal existential threat is presented to them they are trained to eliminate that threat without hesitation to protect themselves and bystanders.
