OT: American Politics

It's in part a matter of science and technology zooming far past the common person's understanding. And the gap is growing larger and larger.
This isn't a learning gap, this is willful ignorance. It's one thing not to know about something but quite another to not want to know about something. At some point being ignorant became a badge of honor and being smart became suspect.

Has anyone ever told these people that microchipping became unnecessary and redundant the minute they clicked "Accept" on their cell phone provider's user agreement?

In that case, I guess I’m safe. If there is no microchip in the vaccine the nosy authorities aren’t tracking or controlling me.

People today are not dumber, in fact I think we see a lot more knowledge-seekers in the world. Our problem is a lack of credible news/info, so people often end up falling down the well of trusted opinions and conspiracy theorists.

The larger problem is that both sides think that the other lacks "critical-thinking".

Our problem is a lack of credible news/info

Nope

I follow about a dozen of the top immunologists/epidemiologists in the world, on my phone, and read what they say about covid while I poop.

We have an absolutely unprecedented access to credible information. What we don't have is a populace with the sophistication to determine good sources from bad. There has been a popular war on expertise going on for a few decades now. As the world gets more and more specialized, broader society becomes more and more distrusting of "they".

It's funny how ignorance can so often end up on two main paths ... people either fear or revere, so we create gods and burn witches...such stupid monkeys.
It's a wonder anything gets done.

Not sure if it's ego or a naturally rebellious attitude to authority, but as ME said it's pretty easy to step aside and follow what the experts say. Having a strong opinion on something that you have 0 expertise in (and one that goes against what the experts believe) is just destructive behavior with zero rationality. Part of intelligence requires collecting and valuing information from the right people and most of the time it's pretty obvious who the right people are.

But we're in a world where people are villainizing the people who are working on getting us out of this. They think this is a movie with evil scientists and shit. So they choose to trust anyone and everyone who disagrees with them no matter what their expertise is in. So weird.

It's a wonder anything gets done.

The same hyper specialization that creates the problem with the dumb monkeys is why the world has become what it is technologically.

.1% of the population (and not the wealthy .1% either) is dragging the rest of us into the future with them, mostly kicking and screaming.

We have access to all this information technically, but in reality most people are taking their cues from social media platforms which, being commercial entities, tailor their messages to suit the user. The algorithm sees what you click on and then sends you a steady stream of the same type of stuff to confirm your bias. They just want clicks. They are monetizing the users because as the now old saying goes, if they offer you the product free of charge, you ARE the product. Consequently, the only way for someone to get a broader overview of a given issue requires the person sitting on the toilet to do a bit of research, and most people don't do that because it takes too long. Once they've pinched their morning loaf they put the phone down and wipe.

But knowledge of that being their game allows you to not play it or at minimum to use that knowledge to tailor your personal experience.

"we suggest that you follow"....

Nope, I suggest that you fuck off.

It's weird how personal responsibility is an expectation in so many areas of our life but as soon as it comes to the information that is forming the basis of our worldview we're off the hook because facebook uses an algorithm.

Makes you wonder how many more nasty variants ‘Merica will end up cooking up themselves in their freedumb Petri dish.

And with us living right next door to them.
