OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Feeling so much like the panic of Feb/March 2020. In fairness back then we were dealing with a virus with a R0 of ~2.5. Early estimates on this variant are 5x that or more. Would wipe out the vaccine effect with ease if true. The hope is that it isn't more virulent and vaccines still at least give that 50-60% protection against death.

"“We should know about the ability of the current vaccine to provide protection in the next couple of weeks,” Burton said Sunday on the BBC’s “Andrew Marr Show.”

“If we have to make a brand new vaccine, I think that’s going to be early 2022 before that’s really going to be available in large quantities,” he said."
Nerds are the best. But the mRNA platform is a bit bitter sweet because there really isn't broad enough protection longer term. It isn't sustainable to do this every time a new variant comes. Some other products in trials right now should be far more variant proof since they target more than just the spike protein. We'll probably need those but who knows when they can produce at scale. Pfizer and Moderna are just way ahead of everyone right now.

Like most outside of Pfizer and Moderna, they have had nightmare issues of producing at scale. Idk where they're at anymore.

Of course, I’m leaving in two weeks and this happens. Fml - I’m never getting out of this country

Wife and I were just starting to talk about sneaking to Mexico to see her family and catch 7-10 days of warm weather in a month or two.

I still have some hope that a 3rd dose provides 85+% protection. My best case is that 3 doses = 85+% against symptomatic illness, with maintained effectiveness against severe disease, with waning to iffy levels by the time the omicron boosters come in 6-8 months. And transmissibility is only a slight advantage over delta.

The last bit seems unlikely at this stage but that would make this not a big deal if this is close to the final boss and once we get the omicron specific boosters rolling. If it's way the fuck more transmissible then that's far scarier.

Remember this variant is basically every single scary mutation we've seen from other variants combined into one. It seems pretty fucking optimized and near peak but we've all said that before..
