OT: Fanboy fight: XBox V Playstation

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

By far. Although they have been losing players like crazy over the last year or so, they were up over (I believe) 10 million subscribers at one point, so they've still got millions of people paying a monthly fee. Most of the other games have figured out that WOW is an anomaly, and that getting many millions of players is probably not going to happen, the market is simply too fractured at this point. The current trend is going free-to-play and making money off of cash shop microtransactions instead.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I stopped playing WoW years ago, level 67 paladin I think. I was on a good server, a friend of mine was not, and that made all the difference in the world. I quit once I decided i wasn't going to devote the kind of time necessary to stick with it.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

Yeah, the time required is completely insane. They are a lot of fun though, with so many things to do. I played some WOW and LOTRO back in the day (not a whole lot though), kind of preferred LOTRO mainly due to the setting. Got tired of the grind and didn't have a great computer, so I became an anti-mmo guy for quite a while. Got a new computer in January and have really enjoyed Star Trek Online and Neverwinter, played some EQ2 as well. I have heard many good things about Guild Wars 2 and Rift, will probably check at least one of them out sometime soon. With Elder Scrolls Online and Everquest Next looming on the horizon.

I'm still playing Neverwinter a bit and want to get back to Trek Online at some point, but for now I am just really enjoying the opportunity to actually play some other games lol. Working on Assassins Creed 2 and just started up FTL for the first time today.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I dabbled with LOTRO, but like WoW, I stopped before I started. I had fun while I was doing it though, that's for sure. I might check out Elder Scrolls.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

My only experience with MMO is with Eve Online. Played for a couple months and then got bored. Plus my computer wasn't really the greatest so that kinda killed some of the fun.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

Everyone loves the Elder Scrolls games, I played Morrowind and Oblivion for a while and they were enjoyable, but I never got fully engaged and didn't come close to completing either one. I am going to dive into Skyrim sometime soon and give it my full attention. I will probably try Elder Scrolls Online, but Everquest Next has really caught my interest. I hope they can pull off what they are attempting to do.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I don't think I will attempt Eve Online because I have heard the level of difficulty at the start is off the charts, but once you get into it, it's an amazing experience. I just don't know if I want to invest that kind of time into one game. It sounds pretty awesome though. Did you hear about this?

One of the largest video game space battles ever seen has taken place in the Eve Online game.

For five hours on 28 July about 4,000 players took part in the epic battle between two of the game's biggest alliances.

The two sides were fighting for control of resources within several of the game's solar systems.

Time was slowed down in the virtual universe to help servers cope with the huge numbers of players and ships.

The battle pitted spaceships belonging to CFC against those from the Test Alliance in a region of space known as 6VDT. It ended in victory for CFC.

Eve Online is a detailed space simulation that sees players fly spaceships through thousands of virtual star systems, seeking resources they can use to prosper.

The resources can be found on planets and in asteroid fields or acquired through piracy or other underhand means.

Ships vary in size from small trading vessels to giant capital ships.

Erlendur Thorsteinsson, one of Eve Online's developers, confirmed in a tweet that the battle was the biggest ever seen in the game.

At its peak the battle involved 4,070 pilots and their ships.

I played Oblivion, but I couldn't take the voice acting seriously. I loved the darker Skyrim.

I played Eve Online at a fairly high level for 5 years or so from 2005-10. Had a lot more free time back then, played 5-7 hrs some days, more on weekends. Awesome game, but the learning curve is steep. Not as steep as it used to be, as they've really improved the new player experience, but it does scare people away. What makes Eve great is that you can pretty much do whatever you want in the game. You aren't limited by your character's class like you might be in other games. Also, the single server gives all players a shared history and makes the political relationships in Eve very interesting. I tried WOW, but it paled in comparison for me.

Elder Scrolls looks pretty badass, I might get into that.

Skyrim is such a great game, I went through all the story and quest lines as well as Daedric and Miscellaneous quests. I don't think Skyrim can ever be fully completed as certains tasks just keep regenerating but in different areas. As far as original quests I got them all done and I would suggest using some sort of a guide to try and keep track of what quests are required to get them fully completed, it can be an incredibly daunting task going through some of the quest lines in order to get them 100% completed. The Thieves Guild quest line comes to mind, it's gets ridiculously repetitive and if your not keeping track of what your doing you'll get so lost in it. The Daedric quests were by far my favourite, as well as the main story line. I think all in I had over 130 hours played and over 135 missions completed. I think all in with the tasks that regenerate there are over 225 missions, but those last 100 or so are pretty bland stuff.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

Yeah in order to return the thieves guild to its former glory I had to do an endless amount of fishing missions. Levelled my pickpocketing to 100 though.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

If memory serves me correctly, you only needed to do 2 per city. If you kept track of where you did the jobs, and canceled the redundant ones, it's a lot faster.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

My character needed the cash, easy way to get the 100,000 gold trophy.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I both love and hate the idea that something like this could happen in a game:

http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/scifi/eve-online-battle-results-loss-9000-virtual-ship.html

If you’re someone for whom sci-fi video games are a passion, then you’ve probably played the award-winning MMORPG EVE Online at least once or twice over the years. Something of an anomaly in the gaming field, EVE is over ten years old, but more popular than ever, thanks to a steady stream of expansion packs and patches. The game features a ridiculously large universe for players to battle in, and part of its ongoing appeal lies in the thriving internal economy and ability to create highly advanced, expensive spaceships to use in the game.

One player, who goes by the name TSID, the owner and virtual operator of The Revanent, recently saw his pride and joy go up in smoke after falling victim to an enormous ambush. But nobody’s feelings got hurt because it’s just a video game, right? Not exactly.

The Revenant was one of only three ships that size in the game, and is worth a virtual total of 309 billion ISK (Interstellar Kredits), which equals out to roughly $9,000. There’s no telling how much time and effort went into creating the spaceship, but it only took a few minutes to turn it into a memory.

You might think TSID would have been on the lookout for major attacks like this, but the trap was definitely sneakier than your average offensive. For months, a user named Bandwidthh led in-game collective Pandemic Legion into numerous different battles. They emerged victorious from all of these encounters, but instead of an honorable warrior, Bandwidthh turned out to be a vicious traitor. He amassed a large number of ships, including The Revenant and a slew of other supercarriers, to respond to what everyone thought was a distress signal. Instead, the fleet flew right into the open arms of a rival faction lying in wait with their own armada.

Before long the dust settled, and The Revenant and nine other large ships were destroyed. I still get mad when I lose my double ships on Galaga, so I can’t imagine the amount of cursing and hellraising I would get into after going through this. I’d probably have to surf the Internet on a computer with a beer bottle-shaped hole in the monitor. Take a peek at the video below, depicting the event, and give a listen to the intense comm chatter that follows.

I think it's four.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I know about the event you posted axl, and yes, Eve is at once the greatest and the worst game because of things like that. Anything goes within the game, and real money is at stake.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

I just read an article over at IGN, looks like they are already listening to criticisms aimed at the initial look...they were going to do it anyways I'm sure...they've made the combat animations meatier, fixed some UI issues.
Here's hoping it's great.

Re: OT: Fanboy fight: XBox 360 V PS3

Eve online sounds like a useful waste of time up until I start hearing things like 9000 dollar ships and shit. For a casual (at best) gamer like myself, the idea of competing in an online game against people who ****ing live on the server isn't particularly appealing.
