The mobile game Clash of Clans is free to download and free to play, so how does it pull in an unheard of $1.56 million in revenue per day?

The secret to its status as the top-grossing app for the iPhone lies in how it has perfected the “freemium” model.

For a mobile game, “freemium” means the initial download is free, but that certain virtual goods within the game’s digital universe cost real cash. And while some games force you to pay extra money to access higher levels, Clash of Clans has implemented a more subtle strategy.

You can play the entire game without spending any money, but Clash of Clan’s company, Supercell, relies on the impatience of its users to fuel the $1.56 million it earns every day.

Candy Crush’s business model works in much the same way, with users being able to pay real money to avoid waiting for more lives. But despite Candy Crush addiction being a well-known scientific fact, the game still only takes in $931,000 a day, well short of Clash of Clans $1.56 million.

Microtransactions will find their way into many AAA titles as well. Some models may end up becoming "pay-to-win". You can buy crates for $3, that may have a high powered weapon for example.

I play a few. If it's a good game and I feel the developers put some work into it, and it's not geared to ripping you off, I pay for something in-game.
If there is no way to advance without spending money I don't.

I quit clash of clans, found the system geared to high piracy myself. Same guys made Boom Beach, and that one plays brilliantly.

I don't like paying in-game, unless if an explicit DLC-type add-on (not that I would do it often, but paying for a map, or a scenario, etc...). I have a big problem with any model where you have to pay to move forward, but definitely it feels like the big bucks in mobile games are these ones where you exploit the lazy user, letting you pay to do something that would otherwise take you extra time.

That's okay... I got it for 2400 no tax plus an xbone with Halo 5 and Gears... I figure I could sell that and make still get a deal.

After tweeking the settings.... man is that TV pretty.
