I saw season 1 before reading the books. It was fantastic. Not hard to follow at all....but then again, challenging enough to keep you interested.
Of course, I then went out and crammed through all the books, and have yet to watch any of season 2.

I am into GoT and haven't read the books. Although, now I want to. Best series on TV. Sucks having to wait so long for the next season.
Only negative would be is you can't really miss an episode. You'd get lost quickly. Many storylines going at once.
