OT: NBA Thread

Unless you live here, you cannot understand that even IF the poll is correct, the second the Maple Raptors lost, the ones allegedly cheering for them forgot they existed.

Because TSN carries NBA games the local sports talk radio station (a TSN affiliate) will find time to talk basketball among the hosts and occasionally do an interview with an NBA "insider" of one sort or other. But you can bet your last dollar that when they open the phone lines for people to call in the only subject that anyone inevitably wants to talk about is hockey in general and the Canucks in particular. More people call in to talk about the BC Lions and Whitecaps than the NBA and not a lot of people call in to talk about them either. The only competition for the attention of the Vancouver sports fan's obsession with hockey is the NFL and even then it's only usually during the NFL season. But people will obsess over the Canucks pretty much every day of the year to the exclusion of pretty much every other athletic endeavor. The show hosts will try to mix things up but the callers only ever want to talk hockey.

Whats that thing about Facts not getting in the way of a good rant?

Do you even listen to the radio? Aside from the syndicated shows from the US there is next to no basketball talk on 1040 from the local shows and the callers almost never mention basketball. I also listen to TSN 990 Montreal online and the Habs are practically the only topic of conversation. Yes they will occasionally have a guest on to talk NBA but there's next to no listener interest in talking about it. They'd rather talk about who the Habs are going to replace Condon with than who's going to win the NBA finals.

There simply are no facts to support your contention that anyone outside of the Toronto media cheerleaders and fairweather fans cares about basketball.

Anecdote = a store saying, hey we sold more gear without stating they sold one before and two after so while technically true they sold more, it is statistically insignificant

I can say that during the entire Maple Raptor run, I never saw a single person wearing Maple Raptor fan gear.

I think you need to learn the difference between anecdotes and facts.
It's not anecdotal. I listen to the same station pretty much every day if basketball was at the top of everyone's mind there would be more talk centred around it. But there isn't. More people are concerned with who the Canucks are going to draft than anything basketball related. The word "Raptors" has scarcely been mentioned since they were eliminated. They are a nom-entity here. I don't care that some 200 square foot sports store downtown sold 3 more Raptors jerseys last week than they'd sold all year. It proves nothing.

You know what anecdotal means
Yeah, listener polls on radio station websites are anecdotal. But there's no way to statistically measure support for the Raptors in a city that they never play in so you have to use your eyes and ears. Not everything can be explained with fancy stats. Find me one pub in the Lower Mainland that would show an NBA game with the sound turned up if there was a hockey or football game being played at the same time. It doesn't exist.

There is nothing but a passing interest in basketball here. Count is pretty much the only person I know out here who actually gets excited about March Madness. And even when we had the Grizzlies people began ignoring them by year #3. In fact, one of the main reasons why people go out of their way to avoid the NBA is because of the bad vibes left over from the relocation of the Grizzlies. People were disgusted by the prima dona players who refused to play here and of the cynical moves made by David Stern and owner Wayne Heisley.

Don't let the sudden appearance of a small but notorious group of Vancouver bandwagon jumpers fool you into thinking that this city suddenly fell in love with basketball or the city of Toronto. That never happened and never will. Vancouver loves basketball so much that they don't even care that they lost their franchise. Nobody has started an "Encore Basketball" movement here. Nobody wants the Grizzlies back. Nobody wants basketball back.

Its pretty hilarious how rattled you two get by the very suggestion that some people in Vancouver may support a Toronto based team.

It's bad enough that they support Vancouver-based teams. Their only redeeming quality is that they hate Toronto almost as much as I do.

It's only normal human behaviour to support the team in the city you live-in.....especially if you were born in that city on top of that.

guess the riders are my only local team

bought my riders vs esks tickets yesterday
- they charge a premium for when the riders are in town

not exactly, that is like me saying SF Giants are my local team because I am in the same time zone
