OT: NFL thread

It is interesting in today's society that if we see someone hit a dog or a woman we might say something or at least feel guilt for not doing anything but hitting a child is accepted.

All I know is that when I heard about this Peterson story I didn't think too much of it until I saw the pics and then realized the child was 4... I mean 4, really? Might as well give that kid the right to vote, drink and drive since they are taking punishment like someone chewing gum in Singapore.

I really like the Cris Carter video where he stated flat out that just because your mother did something doesn't mean it is right and that you should follow. He said he loved his mother and she did a lot of right things but that she was wrong on this. I think it is in the video that CH1 posted but I heard it on the car radio and thought it was bang on. It seems to me this is why racism carries on for generations. Your father hated the black man so I guess you must also.
 
Now the Vikings have basically suspended him indefinitely. He is now on the Commissioner's exempt list ans is to stay away from all team activities. Clearly someone got to them as earlier today he was playing next week.
 
Aren't there reports of another one of his kids he may have abused?

Anyhow Reggie Bush has Peterson's back... maybe.

With the news of Adrian Peterson allegedly punishing his child/children rather harshly and the fallout being his indictment for "reckless or negligent injury to a child," Peterson proclaimed he is definitely not a child abuser but was rather disciplining his child the way he'd been punished as a kid.

He also said he had "learned a lot and have had to re-evaluate how I discipline my son going forward."

But what has Lions running back Reggie Bush learned from the Peterson incident and the Vikings star's subsequent deactivation last Sunday? Not much.

"I have a 1-year-old daughter, and I discipline her," Bush said told WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" show via CBS New York. "I definitely will try to -- will obviously not leave bruises or anything like that on her. But I definitely will discipline her harshly depending on what the situation is."

Bush was asked if he would use a switch (small tree branch) on his child as Peterson has admitted using.

Said Bush: "I would possibly consider it, depending on what she did."

Later, Bush rethought that remark.

"No, I didn't say a branch or a stick," he said. "I said spanking. Spanking is different than a branch or a stick."

That's true. And if Peterson -- who has been accused of injuring another one of his children while disciplining him -- had simply spanked his child, this likely wouldn't be a story.

Later, Bush tweeted out the following.

But clearly, no matter how Peterson or Bush were disciplined while growing up -- for the record, Bush said he was whooped growing up and "I know a lot of my friends and a lot of the guys I played with, they were punished the same way, too" -- that doesn't mean society or the legal system believes it's right in this day and age.

That someone is basically a super large chorus of naysayers. The Vikings tested the waters and a lot of people said NO, including:
The Governor of Minnesota
Al Franken, Senator
Radisson and other sponsors
Media

Remember, Vikings are currently building a brand new billion dollar stadium with heavy support from the government and the public. So looking like you support full on child whoopin' doesn't really jive with the program.

depends where you look I suppose...some parts of the world are still fighting wars that are thousands of years old. And parts of Africa are steal dealing slaves.
 
Sure, and some cultures still mutilate girls genitals as well. However, we're talking about a culture that fancies itself as the greatest, modern civilization on the planet.
 
I've never had to spank my children. There are other ways to discipline. Of course if you raise them to respect you really won't have to discipline often.

Lots of people. Spanking was common and accepted just one generation ago. It doesn't change overnight. I was spanked as a kid and I ****ing deserved it. I would even consider spanking my kids in certain circumstances but it would be an exception.

There is a big cultural part in this, and it's unfair to think that every one has the same values as you. That's why I firmly believe in education over punishment in these cases.

Big part of your success is being present. Guys like AD can't even keep track of how many kids they fathered. Tragically repeating the same mistakes as previous generations.

My mother broke many a wooden spoon and hairbrush on me. Yeah, I was a little shit. My kids have never done anything that warranted it in my eyes though. One's 25 and another is 23. My youngest also hasn't done anything to warrant it.
