OT: NFL Thread

For once, Wehave is not completely incorrect. Many economists would prefer public money be wasted/spent elsewhere. They don't factor in civic pride in having a team, tourist dollars (see fans of other teams travelling to games) and econ development near stadia.

Sure it is money being moved from the Missouri side to Kansas side but isn't it a politician's job to build up his city or state?

Seattle publicly funded their stadia, now people travel and spend there.

It really is not much diff than subsidizing a new plant.

In the end would it not have been better for Montreal, Quebec and Canada to pony up to get $$ spent in Montreal on Expires than said money being spent in DC?

The biggest fallacy is that stadiums generate ancillary revenue (i.e. new money) They don't. What they do is redistribute existing money.

The sports bar that opens up across the street from the new stadium isnt generating anything new. It is merely drawing money away from a sports bar elsewhere in the city. And on non game days or the off-season, that sports bar is empty.

Montreal learned this with the casino. Having a casino doesn't make you a tourist destination like Vegas. If you walk through the parking lot of the Montreal casino, what you will see is that the vast majority of the vehicles parked there have license plates that read "Je me souviens" and very few from Ontario, New York or Vermont. So all that's happening inside the casino is that existing money is being redistributed into the casino coffers. Its not producing revenue, just shifting it. And that money going into the slot machine is money that isnt being spent in a local restaurant or grocery store.

A baseball team in Montreal will never draw enough out of province fans to make the public investment worth it. In the end, the public will get fleeced. They will pay more than they paid to subsidize Bombardier, only instead of a company with over 3000 high paying jobs, the taxpayers will be funding a business that employs about as many people as a mid sized Walmart, most of whom are seasonal employees making minimum wage. It makes no damn sense.
 
And if have no stadium, you have no team AND no sports bar.

No stadia and you end up like Oakland which has lost the Raiders, A's and Warriors in 5 yrs.

Or you can be a city that gets held for ransom every 20-25 years as you keep emptying the public coffers to pay for stadiums you dont need. Atlanta had Turner Field starting in 1996 and have already got another new stadium. Same with Arlington. And now Chicago wants to replace Soldier Field when the existing one is practically brand new.

Its a real estate grift paid for by taxpayers.

Soldier is not new in the least.

I would, and the city told them the same thing. The Habs arent worth what they're worth anywhere but where they are.

And that is one thing I will give Jerrah credit for as well as the SF Giants. But they are the exceptions.
