OT: Post Corona - What Will Change?

Eh, the economics kind of don't work that way, at least not nearly to the level of severity that you suggest. Will there be some cost inflation on desired goods of limited or fixed supply? Yeah absolutely. Housing costs would continue to increase (though the possibility of lower urbanization might off set a fair chunk of that, hard to tell how society would react...how many 30 somethings living in the city would prefer smaller town life outside the city if it was economically viable for them and didn't include commuting to the city every day?) But for goods that are manufactured/produced elsewhere? Any increase in consumer buying power in Canada is a drop in the bucket to the international marketplace...some factory in Thailand will add another shift, another in malaysia or mexico will build out another 50,000 sq ft. Even if they didn't, the cost of the widget would go up a fraction of a cent.

Yeah, that's the main issue imo. What is the new system going to be and how to transition from old to new.

great post (y)

Yep, and the follow up conversation is always...well, would you? No of course not, because you're different and a hard worker...not like them

For a problem so familiar and endemic to society, most people really struggle with understanding the causes and effects of poverty.

anecdotal but a family member just went onto welfare

2 years after he was laid off from his steady job

he had 8 jobs last year and applies for a ton

he is just too stupid / mentally ill to keep a job / get a good job but too proud to go on AISH

when the AB economy was booming he was employable...not sure much anymore

on the flip side a different family member would abuse the system from time to time but the big thing for her was that it was too expensive to find child care and to work a min wage job - so it was easier to just not work

point being - some people work much harder than others but are just not skilled/smart enough

the put on your work boots thing is not reality

My favourite bit of wisdom in the entire conversation is that pulling yourself up by your boot straps isn't just physically impossible, the line was invented by labour rights activists to show the insanity of expecting people to do such a thing without a system to support them in their efforts. It was later co opted by people who don't quite grasp biology or physics.

there's a legit question whether it's better for society (or even those people themselves) to have these types of people work shitty joe jobs or just let them stay home and raise their kid.

The education outcomes kind of speak for themselves there, yeah.

in this case she got her life together once her kids were old enough to stay home alone - took a course and her (and her daughter) are both nursing aids at a nursing home now

With UBI she could have stayed home and taken those courses and been even further ahead of the game.

Ya more and more I like the idea of UBI. In addition to all the benefits to poverty, crime etc. it seems like it would increase everyone's freedom and encourage innovation an entrepreneurship.

You would no longer just have to take or stay in better paying gigs because you need a paycheck. No more getting locked into careers.

Want to try that startup idea straight out of university? No problem. You've got a kid but have always had this idea for a business/product? Can probably take that chance with UBI.

Yeah I think UBI would be great for happiness and quality of life. The thing I liked most about Yang was he wanted to shift how we measured a successful society away from just GDP.

Although less important, IMO it would also be a boon to the economy. The best consumers are healthy, educated, fed, and sheltered.

What??? You guys don't like how things are shaking out? (btw, this appeared in that socialist rag, The Wall Street Journal)

So if I am reading this right CHI

If a 1% had 10 mil , he is now worth 22.5 mil ...... 125% gain ?

What do you mean IF? Don't go all humblebrag on us. (you are correct tho...7 figure Teeds also doing well)

The wealthy have access to investment opportunities that average folks just do not. They also have a much higher risk threshold, given that they can afford to lose a lot of money (hypothetically) and not be living on the streets. They can take higher risks and reap much higher returns without missing a single yacht payment.

I wonder what kind of incentives the government could give companies to have employees work from home? Like a 5% (or 10%) rebate on wages for employees that work from home?

This is Christmas for the elite , buy quality companies at .50 on the dollar in the market

Many are not big risk takers as we think , in times like this its all about wealth preservation.

Buffett is buying when others are crying and deploys cash in great value opportunities with minimal long term risk

They have major tax advantages with creative financial engineering writing off losses .

I am hearing part of this stimulus USA package gives the elite the ability to take advantage of real estate losses that they didn`t have access previously

Excellent point , could help smaller businesses save on office space and get a wage rebate
