OT: Soccer thread

I can’t get over Van de Ven….guy is just a granite block of a dude, looks like a striker…has unbelievable acceleration & top speed….carries the ball like gazelle up pitch, and is always cool under pressure with the ball at his feet.

Always thought he overpaid by £5-15m for him, but I think we likely underpaid by £20m….and more than that if he’s still got room to grow.

It’s one thing to hit on mid money gambles on kids like Udogie, Sarr, etc, or getting a steal on Bissouma or Maddison….but hitting a HR on a young CB is just so huge long term, cause when you drop big money for one, and whiff? it fucks you like nothing else.

As great as it is to get that point away, I’m most thrilled that Ange gets that kind of a confidence solidifying performance from the boys….now they know they can hang with the big boys, and can really buy into absolutely everything Ange sells them.

Huge ‘win’ for the project itself.

Thought Arsenal did a good job shadowing Bissouma early on, preventing us from using him as we played out from the back, and making us use our fullbacks…..but after the first 30 mins or so, he was brilliant anytime he touched the ball.

comparatively I thought Declan Rice was fairly invisible….so I’m still far from convinced Yves isn’t the superior player, despite a £70m+ difference in their transfer fees.

Schedule is pretty solid for the next while….a nice run of home games, including the three toughest vs Liverpool, Chelsea & Villa.

could remain fairly well positioned in the table by the time we face Man City.

“what’d you think of Saka doing your dart throw celebration?”

“he must have still been doing it when I turned him (for the second goal)”

He’s amazing on a few fronts, first off incredible teammate, he’s sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate goals, and today when Udogie botched a pass back to Van De Ven sending Arsenal in on goal, he made the save then immediately gave Udogie a thumbs up and a clap saying “I got you, don’t worry about it”…..actually I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him give players grief after he’s had to make a tough save, due to an error in front of him…..Unlike Lloris who was the captain and used to tear into guys, haha.

He’s a pretty great shot stopper, real explosive and has made a few remarkable saves already where you thought it was a sure goal….he’s also really good at making himself big 1v1, and he’s been much better than Lloris at high pointing his jumps and picking out crosses….but I would like to see him utilize that skill more often. He’s a bit conservative at times when it comes to making a go for it.

His sv% is 83.3% good for 97th percentile in the Prem….he’s also 6th in defensive actions outside the penalty area per game, and in average distance outside the box on those defensive actions….so he’s being that extra defender out there when needed preventing them from going over the top out wide, to exploit our space behind the fullbacks.

since we play out from the back he isn’t asked to kick long much, but when he has he’s largely sucked….but we also don’t have Kane down there with his back to goal ready to receive it.

He’s been good to quite good with the ball at his feet when we play out from the back, and is utilized a ton in this aspect of the game…..but he’s quite clearly a significant jump down from the likes of Ederson, Alisson, Raya, Onana, etc…but he also barely did it at all the last two years at Empoli, so we’ll see how that develops with more and more training. But even with that said, he hasn’t fumbled a pass that ended up in the back of our net or anything, he’s made all the necessary passes for the most part…..just doesn’t quite have that confidence & comfort on the ball like those others.

He’s also much better than Lloris was the last few years, and give his age and how cheap we got him, everyone is pretty thrilled to have him at the club as our long term answer in goal.

The other thing that’s so encouraging about Postecoglou, is that everyone he told the board he wanted…..Maddison, Van De Ven, Vicario, they’ve all been such an ideal fit for his system, that they’ve been even better than expected or than they’ve shown prior to this year.

only got a short glimpse of Brennen Johnson today, but he flashed his speed, did a great cut & and shot, that was lightning quick on the trigger…and nearly potted one, if not for a bonkers one handed Raya save. So very small sample early returns, but he looked an ideal fit as well.

Also guys Ange likes & wants….go straight into the starting XI, so the fact Brennen started away in a North London Derby against one of the best teams out there……is a great sign for his belief in him, and Brennen’s potential in the system.
