I was pretty dang excited to see the new Azzurri take on England on tuesday in a very important euro qualifier but now i'm just hoping they can somehow hold them to a draw.
Just too massive an offensive hole blown into them this week - Chiesa, 26yr old striker with 4gls in 7gms to start the year, banged up with a minor injury and can't play. And then two more young starters knocked out from this betting scandal - Zaniolo, 24yr old attacking mid finally reestablishing himself after double knee surgery with a fantastic run to start his Premier League career with Aston Villa, and Tonali, 23yr old attacking midfielder signed for $100m by Newcastle and finally had a statement game as the best player on the pitch in their blowout of PSG in the champions league. Three young guys that were not only going to be starting in Italy's attack against England but were arguably the three most important attacking players.
The fill-ins aren't awful - 24yr old Frattesi who's scoring goals off the bench for Italy and Inter at a pretty crazy pace this year and probably should be sstarting for both, and then the great story of 34yr old Bonaventura who is kind of amazing even though he never really got a ton of national team attention in his prime.
England meanwhile is firing on all cylinders. They probably seal their euro spot on tuesday and it might be by a big margin. Hopefully the azzurri show some pride and gut out a result of some kind tho. An unlikely 2 goal upset would actually put Italy first in the group with head to head tiebreaker considered.
