OT: The News Thread

The geological history and eustatic sea level is a fascinating topic.

As is the quaternary great lakes history. Scarborough bluffs are some of the coolest quaternary deposits. You can trace the glacial advances that blocked off the St.Lawrence which resulted in the formation of massive glacial lakes that dwarfed the current areal extents.

My geology boner is quite apparent at this moment.

it is the absolute pinnacle of arrogance and pretension to believe that anyone who believes in religion is stupid, and not to be taken seriously. its the pinnacle of arrogance and narcissism. you in your wisdom honestly believe that you can dismiss thousands of years of human thought and development and spirituality. you might not AGREE with it, but to dismiss it is supremely arrogant. a "fairy tale" wouldnt have lasted over 2000 years nor had such a dominant hold on human progress.

but for effete latte-sipping "intellectuals" who think they know better, its part of their self-image to believe they know better and to sniff at "fools" who believe in religion and spirituality.

Funny, I find "the pinnacle of arrogance and narcissism" to be the thought that there's some greater being out there that is aware of you or gives a sweet **** about you in any way shape or form.

To be fair, people find it comforting to believe in a God that cares about them. However, I have a hard time taking anything KB posts about religion seriously as he seems to be a scuzball of the highest order. Seems that his religious affiliation is projected more to suit his political leanings than anything.

Yeah I almost wish I could believe in a "god" that loves me and is going to give me eternal life... it would be comforting at times. Just can't make the leap though.

I know what you mean...it's almost like a box to check off for him.

Pretty much sums up how I feel:

Even for someone raised in a extremely religious household is tough. I couldn't do it.

and yes...progress is almost always "arrogant" towards whatever came before it. The arrogance absolutely is always in the mind of the fore runner who thinks they have it all figured out, that improvement is not possible.

Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods.

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been ground with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.

Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seek traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.

During the invesigation, controllers have found Pioneer Monsanto products among the seeds planted........

It's part if our history. One simple interpretation I've seen is that rabbis, who were pissed off at the smarty pants Greeks and their logic that kept punching holes in ancient Jewish scriptures, ended up creating a new cult/religion by trying to square it all. Ooops. Apparently this work was largely centred in Alexandria.

My personal and totally uninformed theory, and I will never lift a finger to actually research this, is that Jesus was a MLK-Gahndi kind of nationalist politician who preached "turn the other cheek" to gain the moral high ground against the Romans. He realized, after all the brutal and violent rebellions that armed resistance was pointless. The Romans, of course, were not fools and saw right through all this and promptly dispatched the threat.

What time frame are you referencing? Where have you seen that? I'm interested in reading it.

Given what I read in history and having seen the terrain all over Peloponnese and southern mainland, the image I have for ancient Greeks is that they were originally humorless, hardship people. For about 400 years, they eaked out a living on small patches of land surrounded by barren rocky terrain, fought each other like dogs to keep their patches, then they had eastern empire who wanted to conquer them a few times. Given that kind of harsh background, any religion that came along would run the gauntlet of "show me" and "prove it".

Through out human history, when has hardship actually caused there to be less blind faith?

The harder the existance, the more likely the belief in some form of spiritual mythology.

You may, I do (from 14), but I come from a very religious family and friends and they find great comfort in believing in something other then their own senses. In no way shape or form do I want to argue or dissuade them from their spiritual comfort. In fact, I'll aid them.

My mother died two months ago, I had a hard enough time dealing with it while going through a gamut of surreal rituals. Obviously, they gave me no comfort whatsoever, but they keep my father sane, so i'll do whatever it takes, including kissing priests hands if it gives my father comfort.

As a "devout" atheist, I often harshly criticize those who want to criticize other peoples spiritual needs. It's the height of arrogance to assume that one has "progressed" past religion by denigrating others spiritual needs/beliefs. It's another matter if those beliefs by the believers become tools and/or excuses of aggression.

Yes and no. They were not living in caves completely oblivious to their world. I'm not arguing that they would not or did not believe in Gods, what I'm saying is that given their environment, given the start of critical thinking, it would generate a certain stoic "show me" to someone coming along and selling them one God.

Also, it would depend on what time period we are talking about. 200 BC Greeks were far more advanced in critical thinking/questioning then 500BC Greeks. That is why I'm curious as to what time LCS is talking about.

Oiii.....to current discussion.....

It's 3:31 in the morning, my wife is channel surfing and quips from the family room..... should she buy Jesus water? Only $19.95, plus shipping and handling

Then she sighs....."we're in the wrong business". :smilielol5:
