Sure, but what else are they spending on? Giannis or no, you're not getting top free agents to go to Milwaukee. I could see them arriving at less than max money, something in the 27-30 million range but they're going to have to pay the man and they have 2 years to convince Giannis to stay.
 
Danny Green said he’ll return for sure if Kawhi and the rest of the team returns. Said they have something special in Toronto.

There would be a not insignificant amount of teams in better markets that would do something stupid if Middleton hits free agency and they're left holding the bad. If you're the Bucks and you roll the dice on an upgrade, you run the risk of Middleton getting 30 million from the Clippers when they lose out on Kawhi, the Knicks when they lose out on everyone, Brooklyn if they lose out on Horford and want a 2nd option to play with Kyrie, etc, etc, etc.

I'm sure there are guys who wouldn't mind playing with Giannis and all, but do they turn down better markets with good teams in them to do it?
 
yeah, i'd let someone else make that mistake I think.

Middleton isn't really that good. He's not a legit 2nd option.

a) Nurse replacing Casey was so damn huge, just for the willingness to try anything, and because he's awesome.

b) it was a pretty ugly playcall, tbh.

So, you "don't make that mistake" and the Bucks don't take a step forward next year...you now have one year to convince Giannis to stay, what do you do?

It's great to think that Jimmy would look great next to Giannis, but Jimmy is going to look at those 2 years left on the Giannis deal and then ask why he would commit longer than that to Milwaukee. When you're a shit market, sometimes you have to make those mistakes knowingly, just in an effort to push the program further. Similar to the Raptors and the Derozan contract. Sometimes you just have to pay the guys willing to show up, even if you know they're not worth the contract.

In an ideal world, yeah. For a guy who can consistently create his own shot and stretch the floor so Giannis has room to work in the paint, and will stay in Milwaukee, it's not. That's the part I don't think you're letting sink in...it's Milwaukee.

The available bodies at SF are KD (dead), Kawhi (lol), Middleton, Bogdanovic, Barnes, Gay, & Ariza. Of the last 5, Middleton is easily the best. If they pivot to SG instead: Butler (lol), Danny Green, Reddick, Ross, Jeremy Lamb, Wes Matthews, KCP, Seth Curry

Danny would be a great add for them, but that's more of an addition to re signing Middleton and not instead of. Danny doesn't create his own shots. Danny isn't available to them if Kawhi re signs though apparently.

So I just don't see their alternative. They should use his cap hold to add another wing players (Jeremy Lamb?), and then go over the cap re signing him. There's always going to be an opportunity to trade him for another high salary player later if you want to pivot out, but missing out on the opportunity to go over the cap re signing him (where bringing anyone else at max or close is cap shenanigans to make work) in the last 2 years of Freak's existing contract would be a huge mistake.

Coach lets him take too much mid range. 26% of his FG attempts were between 10 ft & the 3pt line. Inefficient. He also, as a general rule gets the opposition best wing defender on him. We've had this discussion before, usage & quality of competition matters. Yeah, the worst of the starters on a 60 win team, but one that can create his own shot decently on a team that badly needs guys who can create their own shots in the half court.

Ideal world, let him walk and replace him with someone better.
