OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

The spring training thing was the only real piece of information we got today that is somewhat interesting....the rest was GM/Rogers speak that at best can be guessed upon.

My takeaways

1) He's not as slick as he thinks he is, borderline smug
2) I get not divulging anything as far as offseason plans, but this reeked of a motivational speaker/team building seminar. I'm not sure i've heard so many business buzz terms that while sound smart, mean actually nothing. ( How many ****ing times can you say process)
3) He found a way to not actually answer many of the questions asked
4) The talk of the importance of high level prospects being sooo important scares the shit out of me. Like Blair i can totally see him dealing a player off the roster for prospects
5) Talked out both sides of his mouth. Under the right circumstances he'd do a 7 year deal, but only if it made sense from a risk standpoint. His first comment was how smart he thought the policy was.
6) **** this guy, I'm frightened.

Couple of things here, # 1&2: agreed.
#3: hella-yes.
#4: high-end prospects are important and nice to have. Let's not pretend they're irrelevant.
#5: People whine and cry all the time about this policy, but the bottom line here is that while Shapiro was smart in answering this one (I don't believe in absolutes), Beeston was right. They almost never work out. So you have to weigh the risk in the decision, you're a fool if you don't.
#6: isn't this always the case, though?

That's literally the best stance to take though. "For the right guy we'll do a 7 year deal but it's probably wise not to hand them out willy nilly". Isn't that what we've been pining for?

Mike Wilner: It feels like I have been spending 5.5 years trying to convince Jays fans that Alex was a great GM. Now they all jumped on board and are outraged when 8 months ago they were calling for him to be fired.

:facepalm

Whenever they put this weirdo on TV he never misses a chance to take a swipe at Jays Talk callers or Twitter. He is such an odd duck.

Yup.

I took from the press conference that there will be no taking their foot off the gas. They want to make the playoffs again next year.

Also, all of you saying that Shapiro was talking out of both sides of his mouth, that is what Alex did as well. You never got a straight answer out of Alex and he was so secretive.

This guy as 1% of the charm of Beeston. I hope he's good, but I think I'll be avoiding any future interviews like the plague.

It's also true.

I agree high end prospects are great but when you come off a season that the Jays did, it should not only not be mentioned as a priority....but probably not at all....it's terrifying to think something could be subtracted off this roster.

Price is gone. I think they will replace Estrada will a mid level FA and fill rest of roles from within.

Stroman
FA
Dickey
Hutchinson
Sanchez/Osuna

Yep. He always circles back to "we need to build a team that competes for a championship every year."

This is also exactly what Beeston and AA would say all of the time.... they wanted to build a team that got into the playoffs consecutively. I think we are chastising Shapiro for saying things that AA used to say a lot.

AA used to also always say that he liked to use the whole group of people to "collaborate" and he would bring it up to Beeston for collaboration as well.

yeah this is fair.....it just seemed to me if he left the door open just so that he didn't get slammed for keeping it shut.

Nothing about his comments on process, risk reward and blither blather Rogers speak led me to believe that he would consider a 7 year deal.

I wanted to hear something along the lines of.

" Regardless if we are successfull or not, we are going to be aggressive in Free Agency and addressing the rotation to continue to fight for a World Series"

that would lead me to believe we could see a 7 year deal

what i heard was

" We want to be a strong organization moving forward in the major and minor leagues, assessing proper risk/reward scenarios and building a successful process"

Pure Rogers Speak Nonsense
