OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I hope he leaves. There really aren't a lot of pure bean counters who run MLB teams. Most senior front office guys at least have some sort of competitive streak in them that makes them want to try to win.
 
Shapiro is most likely using the Mets interest to squeeze more money out of ownership on an extension. I wouldn't be sad to see him go but i fear the worst when it comes to a new hire.

I hope they have a meeting planned at the end of the season outlining what they have planned for stadium renovations. I'm ok with being patient and seeing through their player development. Early returns have been good in terms of drafting and development of some of our stalled prospects. They've done a decent job of identifying mid-level talent that is available on other teams(Teoscar, McKinney, Drury, Diaz, Grichuk). If their goal is insulate Vlady with only a bunch of 1.5-2.5WAR players then we have a problem. BUT if we can turn a couple of those guys into 3+WAR players that'll help big time.

I know some people don't like to give them credit on the Happ trade but imo they've already won the deal. They got in all likelihood 2 serviceable MLB players for 3 months of a #3-4 starter. Could they have gone after a "homerun" prospect? I'm not sure that was available. So far though i f*cking hate the Donaldson trade. Going all the way back to handing out the Morales contract cost us the possibility of keeping Donaldson in a part time 3B/DH role. Everytime i see a highlight of this guy in an indians jersey taking a swing it angers me. This Merryweather better be the next Kluber.
 
The stadium becomes a big deal when the team is bad. As soon as the team started winning in 2015 all the stadium complaints died. It becomes a focal point in a rebuild. They do need to do something.

The future is still good, as long as the team is willing to spend money. Vlad + Bichette + (FA using Tulo/Martin money) + maybe consolidating some of that medium talent together could be a solid foundation going forward. And yeah, with McKinney/Teoscar looking like solid pieces, they've definitely done a good job at identifying that talent. Definitely don't mind that Happ deal anymore with what we've seen of McKinney. Of course, whether those guys can hold up in the long run remains to be seen - Teoscar has only been a .4 WAR guy this year, so he really needs to either learn to play D or needs to get a little better with the bat to be usable as a DH.

But they really do need to get on with the stadium renos. Ideally they should be doing the work the next couple years, so that in 4-5 years time they can be "done" in time to host our next playoff games.

I don't think the team being bad has anything to do with the necessary renovations to the dome. It needs an update. Figure out a way to make it feel less like a concrete bowl. Move the seats inward to improve the sightlines. Take better advantage of the real estate they have. Get rid of that hotel and put something useful in there. It probably goes well beyond the scope of necessary upgrades but having a more modern roof(glass? faster open and close? How about no leaks?).

The dome has location going for it. With the right design it could be a great ballpark. I will say that regardless of what they do to the dome i won't be visiting it more often unless the team is a winner. Over the last few years i would go to 5-10 games per year. Considering how garbage this team has been i only went to one this season. That one game i had to be dragged to by friends. To no ones surprise the game was pretty much over after the 1st inning because the other team scored 2 runs and we didn't do anything the rest of the game.

I don't think I have given the Blue Jays organization a penny of my money since they ran Anthopolous out of town. Do not intend on changing track any time soon.

And this is from a guy who as a high school student bought the Toronto Star Season's Pass every year, attended opening day for the better part of a decade straight, etc.

I'll funnel my fan dollars into MLSE, who actually care to invest in the team and try their best to build winners (recognizing this was not always the case with MLSE either).

Rogers are putrid owners.
 
The kicker is, there's just so much to do in the summer. I love my Jays, but if they're not going to try, neither am I. Lots of other stuff to do during the summer in southern ontario.

Agree.

A couple years ago it was a great way to spend a saturday or sunday afternoon downtown. Go to a Jays game, catch a buzz, head over to a day club/patio. The last 2 years we'd just scrap the Jays game. Woodbine beach is a solid place to chill/drink/play sports. to be fair i've never been in the water.
 
I move back to the GTA next spring and I have almost zero interest in going to Jays games. I have a few buddies who are die hard baseball fans and if they really want to go I'll break down and go, but it won't be something I'll be seeking out personally. Contrast that with the Leafs and Raptors though....I'm visiting for 6 weeks up to Christmas and I expect to get to a bunch of Leaf/Raptors games, despite the much higher price point of tickets. Just give me an organization that gives a shit about winning and I'm in.
