OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

For me i stay patient with the kids at the bottom of the order and trust that Santander comes around. Very little interest in some marginal vet righty masher taking up a spot on the roster.

bigger issue for me is the SP - adding another SP was a huge must in the offseason and Scherzer was a good fit - but if he's not going to be helping this year it's an absolute must that we add another capable SP.

Even if you stay patient with the kids Straw is still the best RHH off th bench, that's insane.

Not enough PA IMO for all of Lukes/Barger/Roden.

IMO you pick one of the non Bargers and swap them for Clase who is also a kid.

Straw's on borrowed time imo. His hot streak is well over already.

I think the healthy lineup is

Starters

1B RH Guerrero 26
LF/DH SH Santander 30
RF RH Springer 35
SS RH Bichette 27
CF LH Varsho 28
C RH Kirk 26
2B LH Gimenez 26 (but holy hell he better start hitting like a starter)
DH/LF
3B

Bench

UT
OF LH Lukes 30
IF RH Clement 29
C SH Heineman 34

4 righties, 2 lefties, and one switch definitely in the starting lineup. Bench with one lefty, one righty, one switch.

So we have 3B, DH/LF, and one bench utility spot in play. (2yr AAA wRC+ in brackets)

IF RH Stefanic 29 (148)
OF LH Roden 25 (143)
3B/2B LH Wagner 26 (142)
OF/2B RH Schneider 26 (136)
OF/3B LH Barger 25 (126)
OF LH Loperfido 26 (119)
3B/1B RH Tirotta 26 (115)
3B/2B RH Orelvis 23 (113)
OF SH Clase 23 (106)
OF SH Berroa 26 (105)
(OF RH Straw 30 (74))

with the only real need defensively is for one of these guys to be able to legitimately field 3B.

I'm still bullish on Wagner being a good fit. Seems like he may have been hurt - didn't play a game in AAA after his demotion until yesterday, and then hit a homer yesterday in his first game back.

Also still bullish on Roden being good.

though i guess even both those guys eventually being good still leaves one spot open, and yeah probably better to be a righty power bat given both those guys are lefties. So maybe you're right.

One guy to keep an eye on though might be PED Orelvis.

Had an horrific first 12 games of the year but is suddenly scorching hot over his last 12gms.

Gms 01-12: 40pa, 10.0bb%, 47.5k%, .063babip, .056avg, .083iso, .289ops, -18wrc+
Gms 13-24: 49pa, 8.2bb%, 26.5k%, .433babip, .318avg, .227iso, .933ops, 153wrc+

Still not a perfect line even those last 12gms but definitely an encouraging one if he can keep it up. Especially remember that at 23 this is the first year he hasn't been young for the level probably ever.

Also Francis doesnt look like a MLB SP to me.

Neither gets swing and miss, or keep it on the ground and gets absolutely barrelled in the process.

I think Turnbull/Urena is as much about the Max spot as it is the Francis one

francis regressing was the expectation imo. turnbull is fine as fodder #5sp depth to compete with him.

the need to sign a real SP (like Scherzer) was built on the expectation that Francis couldn't be depended on as anything but a fungible #5 guy. If scherzer can't contribute then we need a real SP to replace him, not just a borderline mlb guy.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Also, bunting with Clement knowing Straw was next up is pretty fucking putrid.

Straw first pitch hacking is worse

there's been a lot of bunting with risp this year. it's killing me.

even though i know it's unlikely they'll get hits.

The downside is, he cant play a position, and shouldnt see PA vs RHP.

Alot of teams might not want to waste a roster spot on a lefty masher ( with maybe questionable mashing skills) that is awful at everything else.

I do happen to think though, with the construction of the roster, he'd be a worthwhile gamble.
True but we’re wasting roster spots on arguable AAAA players, so may as well lol

I would stick with Roden, Barger, Wagner etc even if they aren’t hitting. Any of them could be part of a future contender.

If you think the current team is a contender already, then sure, send them down and sign a couple of FA.

Pitching, I don’t care, there’s not enough in the system to get through the season IMO, might as well bring in some extra arms to help out. If the end result is that you take innings away from Eric Lauer or Easton Lucas that’s probably OK.

One reason the Jays probably won’t sign any decent FA is that they’re only $6 million from the third competitive balance threshold. If they go over it, their first round pick in the June draft drops 10 spots.
