It’s actually not confusing at all. It’s the basic rule we’ve all always known. We’ve always known that the only way that guy on third doesn’t score on a timing play is if you get the batter at first base even if the guy at third crosses home before that batter gets to first. All other plays, he scores if he crosses before the out. The same reasoning on a play where there’s a rundown with guys on base and the guy on third crosses before they tag one of the other runners on base.
The only messed up thing which makes zero sense on this play is the fact that he didn’t tag up. He can never score without tagging up.
