OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Oh hey Boston lost again.

Boston now only 1.5gms up on the suddenly red hot Guardians for the last wildcard spot.

Just something to brighten all our days.

Question for you experts

Water cooler sports talk with some co-workers yesterday and we talked about Skenes

He has 1 year left in pre-arb then 3 more years of team control

What if he decides not to sign his QO from Pitt ?

Does he to go RFA and Pitt can match or is he tied to the franchise until 2029

Yanks about to be just 3 back as well…

4 if you consider tie breaker.

Scenario:

  • Jays record rest of the way= 1 win @KC, 1 win vs BoSox, 1 vs Rays = 3 out of 9 = finish with 92 wins
  • Yankees record rest of the way = 2 more wins @Bal, 3 vs WhiteSox, 2 wins vs. Bal = 7 out of 9 = 93 wins

Just don't see how the Yankees an catch up. 1 extra win by the Jays, and the Yankees have to sweep back to back series. another extra win (meaning Jays to 5-4), and they Yankees have to win out.

It's not like hockey. Pre-arb - the team gives him a contract. He has no say.
Arb years - if they can't agree, both sides give a number to an arbitrator who picks one of the two.

If Pittsburgh wants, he is pitching for them until 2029 and there's nothing anyone else can do about it.

Jays just need to not shit the bed the final week. 4 of 9 should be more than enough, and going 5-4 you're virtually locked.

Yeah, baseball doesn’t have QOs or RFA status. Pre-arb players are either tendered a contract or they aren’t, in which case they become FA.

The Pirates will tender Skenes a contract and then set the contract amount themselves. Skenes can ask for more, and he’ll probably get a bit more than league minimum but he has no leverage other than threatening not to extend in 4 years time,

He could threaten to hold out, but then he wouldn’t accrue service time and will never get any closer to FA.

Why wouldn't he have the same negotiating power as a hockey RFA? They could tell him to stay home, but also don't they really want him to play? And if he's not happy and doesn't sign, that's not a good result for anyone.

That said, baseball contracts seem to get done with relative ease versus hockey.
