OT: World Politics

This is like all of the reputational and geo strategic damage from Vietnam and Iraq 2 rolled up into a ball and injected with steroids.

I don’t agree with buddy that Iran is a “global power”. Regional, yeah. But it is a proxy for China.

I lean similar with a caveat. A regional power can't have a non nuclear temper tantrum that upsets world markets and causes crisis on the other side of the planet. Even if you're completely detached from Iran in every other way, they're ability to shut down Hormuz at any given moment starts a clock on international financial catastrophe. Like, the Europeans got told yesterday that their airlines have about 6 weeks of jet fuel left before planes travel ceases to exist.

Now, this is probably a temporary power (in geopolitics time frames) for 2 key reasons. First is that countries tend to take power shifts like this seriously and plan for them. I expect a pretty massive move to build more emergency storage by basically everyone (filling that storage will probably put upward pressure on prices for years). Second, and probably the biggest reason China has tolerated this so easily is that it's short term pain for them, but long term gain as the most frantic reaction by modern economies is going to be electrifying fucking everything. EV credits, grid upgrades, etc, etc just became a near term national security issue rather than a long term climate change issue. This will speed up the green transition among modern economies, and China will benefit the most from the boom.

My father rode a camel
I drive a car
My son flies a jet
His son will ride a camel

Yep, the final nail in the coffin of the old world order.

My only caveat with that is that the idiot Dunning-Kruger administration is the principle cause of this humiliating debacle.

Anthony Eden was 100X smarter than Jabba when he fucked up Suez, but he was at the head of an extenuated zombie empire.

The US, I think, is still fundamentally a superpower. But it is being governed by a human atrocity and a cabal of nutbags/crooks for the (apparent) benefit of an idiot base.

Really hope carney is paying attention and building up drones and unmanned units like Ukraine has. I haven’t seen much in the news about doing this so far

Canada already has a quietly very good drone industry fwiw. We've been one of the bigger suppliers of drone parts and tech to Ukraine over the last few years and we have co development and production deal in place with the Ukies already

The drone part of the deal comes with 220 million in funding on our end.
