OT: World Politics

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party is on track to win its biggest majority in more than three decades, according to the most hotly anticipated poll of the general election campaign.

The Tories will win a majority of 68 seats in the Dec. 12 election, according to a YouGovpoll which used a technique that more closely predicted the 2017 election than standard surveys. Such a majority would allow Johnson to deliver on his promise of getting his Brexit deal through Parliament by Jan. 31, and could also give him some freedom to make compromises in subsequent negotiations with the European Union.
Interesting.

We care about 42 dead of measles in Samoa?

Its not like they are anti vaxxers, they are just too poor to get proper healthcare and vaccinations.

You might want to check that again

In 2018, only 31% of children under five had been immunised, she said. “When measles enters a country like that, there is a huge group of people who are not immune,” she said.

The tragedy, she said, was that immunisation rates used to be far higher in Samoa, with coverage measured at 84% just four years ago.

Officials have blamed the low rates in part on fears sparked last year when two babies died after receiving measles vaccination shots.

This resulted in the temporary suspension of the country’s immunisation programme and dented parents’ trust in the vaccine, even though it later turned out the deaths were caused by other medicines that were incorrectly administered.

O’Brien said that an anti-vaccine group had been stoking these fears further with a social media campaign, lamenting that “this is now being measured in the lives of children who have died in the course of this outbreak”.

Misinformation about the safety of vaccines, she said, “has had a very remarkable impact on the immunisation programme” in Samoa.

Ian Norton at WHO’s emergency medical unit meanwhile warned that the outbreak was taking a heavy toll on the small country’s entire health system. New cases had “really spiked dramatically”, he said, pointing out that more than 200 new patients arrive at hospital every day.

 While important as an issue, what does measles in Samoa have to do with a ( possibly lone wolf ) terrorist attack in London. The bravery of the civilians who initially subdued him or the fact that the attacker was on parole from a previous terror related conviction.

Just because he was stopped before more people where killed doesn’t mean it isn’t a significant new as story.

My mistake. Obviously not enough people were killed in London to make it newsworthy.
It’s not that I don’t care about thousands who die from measles each year it’s that the story in London had nothing to do with children dying anywhere. You can always start a new thread about the availability of life savings vaccines.

Why would a new thread be necessary to discuss anti vax nuttery reaching other countries? That's very much on point for this thread.

Regarding the London attacks, I'm not sure what's to discuss. Kid that was born in the UK grew up into a terrorist douchebag, got caught doing some shit, served his sentence and was apparently meeting all of his parole requirements went off the reservation in a knife attack, was stopped by regular Londoners (including a polish immigrant wielding a narwhal tusk......)

So yeah, I'm not sure where the discussion points are here: Gun control is good? Fuck civil liberties if you're found guilty of a terrorism related crime? Regular people either need to listen to security expert advice to disengage and get away from those situations, or take it seriously enough to train for it?

I'm not sure what's with the shitty attitude about this.
