Couple of thoughts …
Pretty much a textbook Canes road win last night. They choked the life out of Ottawa with possession, and made just enough of their chances pay off to grab the W. They also made an absolute has of their power play chances, which made it tighter than Ottawa deserved. One thing you generally always see in Canes road wins is that the expected goals line actually spikes UP when the other team is pushing for a goal late in the third. If you had to define Rod Brind’Amour’s teams as a coach … a screen shot of one of those xG charts is a good way to do it.
I keep saying this, but I’m not sure Ottawa’s coaching staff knows why they’re losing these games. You HAVE to break up Carolina’s possession game with your own extended zone time, and when the Sens play a patient game in the O zone, they look pretty good. But they just keep barfing up the puck on fancy plays and hopeful crossing passes, which leaves them out of position to set their forecheck and get meaningful pressure on Carolina’s outlet. That lets Carolina off the hook and lets them reset the possession clock over and over again.
Shame about Sanderson. I really appreciate his game and I think it sucks both that he got hurt and that his coach is using him as some sort of bait in a fishing expedition. I don’t think the league will bite, but you never know. Yeah, Hall got him high on that hit, but it’s freaking Taylor Hall and he’s got a LOT of career to examine. Yeah, he does occasionally get nasty, but he’s generally not subtle about it when he loses his cool. That hit just wasn’t that. He threw a shoulder and happened to catch Sanderson in the head. I’m not even convinced that Sanderson left the game because of that hit and not because of the puck he took to the hand later on, honestly. You’d hate to think Green would lie about such a thing, but … yeah. Either way, you hate to see good players get hurt.
If you’re Brind’Amour you have to feel good heading to Game 4 with a chance to get this done early. The Canes haven’t played great, but they’ve gotten to their game in all three outings. Most of what they have to work on is detail stuff, and the freaking power play again. Sigh.
