I'll use your rhetoric and go the other way, having a team full of Americans winning all those Cups would have never made the Montreal Canadiens the cultural institution that it is in Quebec. The team would be popular but it's would not be part of the cultural fabric.

Like it or not, the cultural aspect is an integral part of the team, as much as the winning tradition. You don't get to pick one or the other, and it goes both ways.

We both agree that talent and winning matters though, but sucks for you but the cultural aspect matters too. It's no coincidence that Quebec stopped producing talented forwards after Lafleur retired and stopped being a goalie pipeline after Roy got traded.
If the team is a consistent loser the fact that it's French will actually piss francophones off because they'll be tarred with the same brush of failure. If anything they will seek to distance themselves from a bad team full of people like themselves. It's far better for them to be able to point to the lack of French players as the reason why they suck. It's the same reason why they don't really want all the anglos to leave Quebec. If they do, who will the French blame for all their problems and shortcomings then? Who will be the bogeyman on which they can project their small minded xenophobia?

Yes there is a cultural aspect to the Habs but that identity is as much tied to winning as to language. Nobody wants to be identified as part of a group of losers. They took pride in the Habs back in the day because they were a team of Frenchmen who also kicked ass and won championships. If all they did was get their asses kicked that cultural attachment would have got old real fast.

So do I.

Still don't hate cultures for stupid reasons.
I don't hate cultures, especially those of which I am a member. My family can trace our roots back to Jacques Cartier. But in terms of the Habs none of that matters more than winning Cups. I'll take a team of 20 guys from Africa who only know how to speak that clicking language. If they win Cups, that's all I give a shit about and it's all any Habs fan should give a shit about. Just fucking win, goddamnit!

You don't see yourself rationalizing your prejudice do you? Seriously trying to get you to see what it is you're doing.

What prejudice? I'm prejudiced against shit hockey teams that care more about "culture" than about winning? Has it been so long since this franchise hoisted a Cup that we've all forgotten why they play the games and what they're supposed to be trying to accomplish?

Your drivel has crossed over the hockey line a lot man. Just get over it already.

Yes, truly shocking that people would take pride in people sharing their own heritage being really good at something.

But Mario Lemieux didn't have the same cultural impact in Quebec as Richard, Beliveau, Lafleur despite being a better player.

That was also due to socio political environment during their era…. historical timing

Aurél Joliat & Georges Vézina did not have the same cultural impact in Quebec, despite being NHL & Habs legends

Maybe but Roy had a pretty big impact, even if not to the scale of the other 3. Also other greats like Perreault and Dionne were mostly ignored. It’s truly the combination of local elite talents, on this team.
