The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I think everyone's heart is in the right place on this debate <3333. Some here may be overrating Reid and Carels and feel over confident that they'll be #1d. When in reality it's probably just a small probability. Neither of them have can't -miss #1d profiles. The better question would be you'd still do the trade if you're ok with the more likely outcome of the d being a #2/3/4 in 4-5 years. The timeline aspect makes that one iffy for me.

But if we knew for sure that they'd be an elite #1 then yeah I think we'd all be on board! (Other than lof)
yeah i'm pretty high on Reid and Carels as far as the draft goes, but it will take a couple of years till we have any idea how good they can be, Knies is already a stud and we're trying to win. I understand the temptation here, but it's a no-go for me.

Orrrr he trades Knies for a potential future top pair d and minimizes the short-term loss by signing Mason Marchment to replace him or Tuch or something.

It really comes down to what you think Knies is. Last 2 seasons combined he's a 26G, 62PT winger that was worth +1.54 Doms last year (175th among all forwards). We can talk about what he's capable under another coach/system with more development and those are valid discussions to have, but what he's done so far is what he's done so far and it's very replaceable.

Yeah I disagree with the notion that they'd be blowing it up and accepting that they're shit next year if they lose Knies. Lots of free agents can replace what he brought to some degree I think.

Tons of trade options there as well. I mean, even the rumoured Rielly for Toffoli deal, Toffoli has averaged 24G, 52PTS over the last 2 seasons in fewer minutes than Knies and was worth +4.34 Doms last season (122nd among forwards).

Are you saying the proposed Habs deal of Zharovsky, Pickford and two firsts was too much for LOFs favourite player
I might prefer that one over straight up for top 5 since you might hit on two or three of those, rather than be boom or bust on one pick.

But that package proposal was ridiculed here, and the straight up deal is somehow genius think outside the box innovation.
