The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Yeah, I didn't even know there was ever such a position. I thought they were all assistants. But long time Leafs great whipping boy gets the promotion.
Assistants specialize in one area like pp or d. Associate coach is second in command and the guy that takes the reigns when the head coach is fired. He's partnered with the head coach to determine overall strategy and shares duties with him. I'm pretty sure it's standard in the NBA and NFL? But not really in the NHL.

Well earned promotion for Alfredsson imo and obviously the main reason he left Ottawa where he was just a lowly assistant. I'm sure the pay raise is nice too.

NHL teams generally won't let their employees out of their contracts unless it's for a promotion, and Ratface was already an assistant coach in Ottawa. So the Leafs likely had to come up with some kind of title bump to offer him in order to hire him away.

So we've got
Sullivan - pp coach
Gruden - d and pk
Werenka - player tracking "analytic" voodoo shit
Alfredsson - Hiller's partner in crime

Oh wait Sullivan isn't on the leafs website, so maybe Alfredsson has a fake title and he'll just be the pp coach. They didn't mention firing Sully either, so maybe he'll be the Marlies head coach.
