The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

If we had another pick in the top 5, after drafting McKenna, the play is for a dman.

If Chayka is truly a BPA guy, plus the Mats connection, I wouldn't be surprised if they took Stenberg at 2. It would actually be an incredible storyline, the entity known as Chundin with the double headed top 2 picks matching their nationalities.

This could be cleaner if VAN wants to blow their brains out on Knies. But they'd have to be OK with 50% retention. So instead we pick #1 and #3 and let SJ take Stenberg.

Just keep adding good, skilled pieces and trying to make smart decisions. Make the team as attractive as possible. If he ever hits free agency you can do what’s necessary.

Yeah, this @LeafOfFaith .

If it’s the back half of the 2027-28 season and it’s clear McDavid is going to market, you can clear the necessary space.

So just focus on doing what’s best for the team in the meantime without trying to game plan for a free agent crop that’s multiple seasons away. That never works out.

Come on man, we’re not trading Knies so that we can select Stenberg and then hope he one day becomes as good a winger as Knies. We’re not trading him for a pick or prospect period.
It's so obvious and rational. Wish we could stop hearing about it now that Chayka himself basically shot it down.

Yep. We're still talking about 2 yrs from now before Connor is a UFA and if he does demand out after next year, Edmonton is going to want stuff back. Elias Petterson coming off of a 30/70 bounce back season at ~9 million could definitely be part of that stuff.

I'm not fully opposed. I just don't want to do anything stupid that costs us the chance to see McDavid in blue and white. If Petterson is going to be a true dump with a bunch of retention, maybe it's too good to turn down. But Chayka should be turning over every stone to see what better opportunities might be out there that wouldn't carry as much risk.

Also a good point.

What's more realistic, Knies being moved or McDavid signing here? I'm not advocating moving Knies and I'm perfectly on board with keeping him, but there are some intriguing targets and scenarios out there.

Cap issues will not be the reason Connor doesn't end up here. Salary always goes back in big trades and it's easy to clear 5-10 million in additional space in every summer just by letting surplus UFA's/RFA's walk

It's highly unusual and unrealistic for a team that wants to win now to trade one of its best players, who also happens to be the youngest of its best players, and signed to a cheap long deal, to another team in an effort to improve. It's difficult to fathom such a deal. Not impossible, but very, very unlikely.

I think Stenberg is clear #2. At least he is much more likely to reach his potential than the dmen are.

Stenberg's production in sweden is nuts.
