The official NFL thread

Bills has an economics degree, I think, and is a ruthless exponent of cost-benefit analysis. It started when he cut Lawyer Milloy just before the season started. Just bananas. No one could have imagined.

Earn your cap space or GTFO.

The weird thing, is that he's still able to get guys to buy in to "The Patriot Way" so wholeheartedly, despite the fact he's so "disloyal" (for lack of a better word) to (most of) his players.

His ability to earn respect/loyalty from his team....while being as cutthroat as he is (not just with cutting guys/not paying value...but even with the Butler type stuff).....is truly remarkable.

Every bit as impressive as his football mind, which is itself the best ever.

I’m an apostate.

It’s not because of Bill. It’s because of 12.

Bill can be utterly ruthless/bastardly because all those guys know they can win or cash in with golden boy. I simply can’t believe he’d be able to get away with that shit otherwise. Just watch, they’ll dump some salary this week and then sign Dez for one year.

So, is 12 another guy who takes way less than market value because of 12?

Dez to the Pats wouldn't be a surprise at all.

But i think he's been eyeing the NFC east. Giants could be in play as a way for him to really stick it to Jerry. I don't think he's done just yet either. Motivated and injury free he could probably put up 1000 yards again.

Have to think him & Kraft have some sort of Dirk/Cuban handshake agreement.....for him to make some of that money back, on the backend.

Off the books.

Interesting.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...triots-discussed-trading-draft-baker-mayfield

Baker Mayfield's agent says the New England Patriots indicated to him they were considering trading up to the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft if the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback out of Oklahoma was available.

Mayfield's agent, Jack Mills, made his comments on "The Business of Sports with Andrew Brandt" podcast.

Mayfield ended up being picked No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns, but Mills said the Patriots were interested enough in his client to swing a blockbuster trade if Mayfield fell one spot. Mills said the Browns kept their interest in Mayfield quiet right up to the draft and that the New York Jets indicated that they planned to pick him if he was available at No. 3.

"When he visited the Jets, they pretty much said you're our guy if you're there," Mills said.

Asked if on the day of the draft whether he was expecting the Jets to select Mayfield, Mills said: "We knew that was the bottom line."

I'm curious, how does the agent benefit from the "pumping" in this case? His player gets signed to the same deal regardless, and he went #1. Stock can't get any higher than that.

Plus, Pats OC got to meet with Baker only after the Pats acquired another 1st rounder. (and had the ammo to move up)

The biggest tell is the fact the Pats didn't have the "ammo' to move up. Their two firsts and a 2019 1st still doesn't come close to getting them the #2 overall pick.

Its been confirmed the Jets Big Board had been Darnold/Baker/Rosen.....so had Allen gone first, Saquon 2nd, Baker was sliding past the Jets.

As for his agent and rational for pumping his players tires....he's also in charge of getting his player endorsement deals/future contracts etc...his job is to always pump his players tires as much as possible.

Charlie Caserley polled 24 NFL GM's, and asked them to rank the top QB's pre-draft.

17 had Darnold #1
3 had Baker.
2 had Josh Allen.
2 had Josh Rosen.

The surprising thing to me tho, is that if you factor in the overall rankings (who got the most 2nd place votes, third, etc)....Allen actually had a higher ranking than Baker, by a decent margin. Did not expect that.

Darnold = 87pts
Allen = 61 pts
Baker = 46pts
Rosen =45pts

(4 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd,:2 for 3rd, 1 for 4th).

I wouldn't put too much stock in the info NFL GMs provide. Minds can change in a hurry...ie Aaron Rodgers was supposed to go #1 in 2005

They all probably say that shit to each other. You think Mayfield didn't tell all of Cleveland, Jets, New England and every other team he interviewed with that he really, really wants to play there and hopes they pick him.

You're conflating Draft media opinion of Rodgers versus how teams have players ranked (not to mention team needs, etc). Draft media having Rodgers #1 and 17/24 teams having Darnold #1, are two completely different things.

Hell, the QB rankings Caserley provided (which I would personally put stock in given his connections)......doesn't tell us which teams valued these QB's over Saquon, Chubb, Nelson etc....or if they feel any of these QB's are franchise QBs....solely how they ranked them relative to one another.

In this instance 24 GM's who know/trust Caserley.....annonymously gave their rankings, knowing he wouldn't disclose it until after the draft.

Troy Aikman for instance said he spoke with a GM who told him there were no franchise QB's in this class. (Talking Brady/Rodgers/Luck/Brees/Rivers calibre guys)....and Aikman tended to agree.

On the other hand, Daniel Jeremiah gave Darnold the highest QB prospect grade over his last three draft classes...over Wentz, Goff, Watson etc...

The average fan has a hard time seperation the QB prospect grade from the QB finished product too.....Wentz & Goff made tremendous strides in their second seasons as a result of new mechanics & far superior coaching & system in the case of Goff....Rodgers took enormous strides by having three years of practice reps before having to become an NFL starter....Drew Brees didn't become Drew Brees until landing in Sean Payton's offense....etc etc...

The prospect is only about 60% of the equation.....then it's a matter of the system he lands in, how it fits his skillset & how good the coaching is around him to play to his strengths, & coach out his weaknesses.

Aside from maybe Rosen......all of Darnold, Allen & especially Mayfield....will have their futures determined by what kind of offensive systems their teams implement around them. (If Cleveland tried to use a Brady/Manning type drop back passer pocket for example. Odds of him failing skyrocket.....if they implement a lot of college schemes and/or utilize Brees/Wilson type moving pockets/roll outs to minimize the impact his height limitations impose....his odds of success increase)

5 year, ~$150m extension for Matt Ryan.....$100m of which is guaranteed. Kicks in after the 2018 season, for which he'll make $19.5m.

Ryan will make more in year one of that contract, than Baker Mayfield will make for the entirety of his 5 year rookie deal.
