The official NFL thread

I don't like it when decisions are made on the fly that are not based on any precedent and solely on how many # campaigns are on twitter. There was no policy so the NFL ok we need one, fine six games first offence, lifetime with possibility of reinstatement for a second one. It was made on the fly but so be it. Then for a guy on his first offence because of a video that they knew about, they go lifetime. How is that anything but a kangaroo court?

Indefinite suspension is the same thing in this case.

No, it's not.

This current suspension will allow him to play again if a team wants to sign him......a lifetime ban wouldn't. They're not remotely the same.

No team is going to touch him for fear of the backlash from people like you.

I have no problem whatsoever with a team signing him once his suspension is fulfilled.

Would you agree that based on NFL policy it should have been six games as this is a first offence? On what basis can Goodell ignore his own policy which he brought down, what two weeks ago, and suspend him indefinitely for a first offence?

He was suspended indefinitely for a first offence in contravention of the NFL's recent punishment policy.

Being in the minority doesn't mean I am wrong.

You are wrong though.

Goodell's letter to NFL owners Aug. 28 announced new, standardized penalties for domestic violence and sexual assault by any league personnel: a six-game suspension for a first offense and an indefinite suspension of at least one year for a second offense.

However, the letter also said there would be "consideration given to mitigating factors, as well as a longer suspension when circumstances warrant." Goodell admitted he "didn't get it right" on Rice's punishment. "Simply put, we have to do better, and we will," the letter said.

He is using the hammer he just made for himself, for the exact reason he made it.

It was an indefinite suspension so that they didn't have to make a decision on the fly.

As for no team touching him... well that's his problem. You can't force a team to sign a guy who they feel will hurt their brand.

Blaming the public for the backlash is like blaming the wife for getting beaten.

Ray Rice is the author of all of this, and has to accept responsibility for it. Thats life.

The NFL is full of guys who got second chances though. Vick literally killed puppies with his bare hands and signed a $100 million contract after.

Rice's life isn't over. He did something really shitty and now he has to suffer the consequences. I don't understand how anyone could have a problem with that.

except he already knew he knocked her out in the elevator AND had already punished him for the crime, now he is repunishing him and you are saying well now he has seen a video so he thinks it is worse than he did, even though he already knew he had punched her, knocked her out and dragged her from the elevator.

Seems to me that is double jeopardy. He is has been convicted and sentenced a second time for the same offence.

This is private business not the court room. Double jeopardy is a legal concept that has no application in this conversation.

What Rice & his wife told the NFL happened in that elevator doesn't jibe with what the NFL later saw in the video. Thus, seeing the video changed both the Ravens and the NFL's opinion of how it should be handled.

TMZ is reporting the NFL never asked to see it, but would have had it in their hands in no time. Either they were lazy, or did not want to see it.

This is such a massive blunder.

I agree with this. Rice is a scumbag, but this is complete double jeopardy. The NFL looks like morons.

Tim & Sid were talking today and said there have been 78 NFL players involved in domestic disputes since 2000. Only 7 have been released from their teams.

I think with this and the Sterling situation, emotion and humping-the-gun is occurring rather than studying the facts.
