The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

If I had to wager I'd say Matthews high scoring days are behind him.

Freddy Fender comes to mind.... Wasted Days And Wasted Nights.:(

He's had typical Matthews scoring runs over the last 2 years it's just never sustained. I want to see him away from Berube's obviously dogshit system before we accept that as fact. Matthews is a possession dominant forward who thrives on scoring goals in a bag of different ways around the net...the proverbial "nose for the net" x 1000. Him scoring those 5-10 ridiculous 30 foot wristers a season might be a thing of the past but him scoring at a 40 goal pace over the last 2 years as our possession cratered is pretty bullish on the potential of him being 50+ again imo.

They must be paying Mats a mint for him to uproot and relocate his family here. I really hope he's driven about winning and this isn't mainly about the money.

I wouldn’t put it past him, but 69 goals was probably just his peak season and he probably never has anything close again.

But he’d have scored a lot more the last two years if he wasn’t used like prime David Kampf under Keefe. His usage was insane. And obviously playing is a system where you don’t have the puck doesn’t help scorers. That was a bigger impact than his shot IMO. He can still score.

hard to know how anyone will do ahead of time, especially when they (thankfully) have so liittle track record, but I legit to like what chayka was doing in arizona in an impossible situation, and i love and respect mats, so this strikes me as having a good chance at working.

So, on one hand I definitely dislike the corpo sounding bullshit title.

On the other hand, I don't know if I loved the idea of Mats being the top hockey guy with no front office experience. In fact, fuck that, I didn't like it at all regardless of how much I love him and how strong his opinions were.

Keep in mind, when Colorado brought Sakic into the organization originally, he was hired as "Executive Advisor and Alternate Governor" (nice corpo bullshit title). 2 years later he was named Executive VP of Hockey Ops (which was the top hockey job on the organization, he had final say on all hockey moves) and it was the GM who was there for show until Sakic took the GM title as well at the end of his first season as EVP.

This is probably pretty similar. Chayka gets a few years to prove whether or not he can do the job, and Mats is job training to take it if Chayka gets shuffled off to that big drive through in the sky.

or else searching again in 2 years.

If my concerns come true and it turns out that Chayka is just a guy who knows how to sell numbers that he's not an expert on to people who know less about it than him, and our reflex reaction is "we'll never trust a nerd again, get me Chiarelli on the phone"....yeah, fucking disaster. If it's "this guy wasn't the expert we were looking for but he talked real pretty in the interview" and they go deeper on data, sure whatever.

I fucking love how ballsy this hire is. Doesn't mean it's gonna work but my God it's the exact opposite of safe. Safe has been death for this organization.

With that said, I don't think his run as Arizona GM was any worse than mediocre and mediocre is such a massive, massive upgrade from Treliving, who I wouldn't let shovel my snow, that whatever.
