What does Chayka need to hear from Berube “…what did he do when times were bad…his view on how he was integrated. His view on all the different resources available with the leafs and how he can do a better job with that.”

Chief is fucked.
That was a very good interview. Almost no mention of size and grit. What a fucking relief.

They're in good hands.

Also found it interesting that he said that the mission he was given in Phoenix was to keep the team in arizona. Whereas now he's trying to win a cup. It was an admission that he was just trying to sneak them into the playoffs, as opposed to building a winner. Which we kind of knew, but good to see it confirmed. That was a team that really needed to bottom out and collect some superstars, but he was pressured to make a lot of win-now moves that they weren't really ready for. It truly was a unique situation.

Chayka’s off to a good start. He is the most articulate GM I think we have ever had, communicated a clear vision for organizational excellence, owned past mistakes and has spoken very plainly and clearly - no need to parse his words or read between the lines.

He prioritizes data and science, recognizes that he has has resources as GM of the richest team in the league that he plans on leveraging, and prioritizes skill. We also know from his time in phoenix that he isn’t afraid to he bold and make decisions.

I think the Mats thing is a bit muddy but honestly think he’s here mostly to take some heat off 34 and 88.

Yeah he also managed to do that without selling the house, setting that house with a full 3 generation family inside of it on fire and then taking a dump on the ashes like the last guy b

He built a team with many good depth pieces and ended up with a very good defensive team (~top 10ish in xga on aggregate over his last few years I believe) with strong goaltending that couldn't score. They were missing 2-3 superstars, and you can't really find those easily outside of the draft. And they didn't have any top 4 picks during his time there because they were never quite as bad as they needed to be, and even traded 2 top 10 picks due to ownership pressures.

Yeah. Players love Shane Doan. So they hate Chayka for “stabbing him in the back”

It’s very primal.

Not sure where Matttews lands in the Doan orbit

i think im a bit skeptical of chayka for sure but this reaction from some of the dumbest people in hockey is so over the top and actually makes me feel a bit better.

Yeah I'm not looking for comfort, I want to be skeptical of him but I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't comforted by the dumbest people being so dead set against this.

Tbh after hearing him talk, I have very few concerns that Chayka is going to take the right approach and have the right process and I'm not sure the Leafs have had that since the early Dubas days.

Doesn't mean he'll be right or good in this leadership/managerial role (which as we know is about more than just valuing your R&D team's input) or that the people he relies on for data analysis will be right, or that he'll be great at negotiating or that the GMs on other teams won't blackball him/refuse to negotiate with him.. But all I ever wanted was a data driven process. And they have that now. So I can sleep easy and not be forced to hope for pizza boy to accidentally make a good move or target the right player. Whoever they target/acquire/get rid of will be done for a reason and there will always be data behind it.

I'd be hypocritical to complain

And for the record stabbing him in the back was not wanting to resign a 41 year old that sucked.

After signing him the summer previous to a 1 yr 5 million dollar deal. Doan scored 6 goals that season.

A 41 yr old who has just scored 6 goals for 5 million was upset that the team wanted to move on?

i'm not sure the media has even really talked much about that we might be handing over a 6th overall to boston here tonight.

They would have to talk bad about Brad and actually do their fucking jobs to do that though. Way more fun to talk about fake chayka controversies.
