think I would like someone who has worked in the job more recently than 2014
That makes sense on its face, but many who’ve been on the job since then have archaic mindsets in how to build and operate teams. Wouldn’t it prove to be a boon if someone who is coming in, works on introspection, accountability honesty and analytics instead of learbeans and gritensity?

Yup.

The sad fact is that experience = old boys club. If you want someone wearing a different suit but with the same ideas, "experience" is the way to go.

I bet if they hired Gillis today, the first thing he'd do is shut down Willy and Knies and actively try to lose out the rest of the way. Nothing is more important than potentially adding a young top pair D in this years draft. There is probably no other way to accomplish acquiring a guy like that this summer. Absolutely mindnumbing stupidity to not have been all-in on the tank since the olympics.

The stupid thing is, even at 77 points with 7 games left, they legit have a chance to finish 5th last. The 5th last place team is currently on pace for 82 points, which is far higher than the norm. They had a gift.

Yep. And the frustrating thing is that you don’t even need tanking to justify shutting down Knies. Just that there’s no goddamn sense in having your only young core piece grinding through a knee injury in a season that’s already lost.

Fuck, are they ever stupid.

Having someone who hasn't worked the job specifically because he won't kowtow to the old boys network and because he demands things like total autonomy and two separate fully funded amateur scouting departments is probably a good thing tbh.

that sounds good and all, but it's odd that the entire league has disagreed with you on Gillis for a decade, including opportunities with expansion squads.

It is funny comparing how FLA is just out in the open "Yep, we're tanking and we're not afraid to admit it" whereas the Leafs will make their players grind through injuries to "prove" they aren't tanking. Maybe it's out of fear of reprisals from the league (which I can actually believe, tbh). It's already been well established that a double standard exists for FLA (if not all the Southern teams).

He's also very disruptive and that does not make many ownership groups comfortable with him. So he has strict demands and the teams he has spoken to were obviously not offering him what he seemed.

And quite frankly that's what makes me skeptical that the leafs hire him. I think it's far more likely they agree to hand the keys over to an Armstrong type.

The one Gillis bull case here is that Pelley has straight up said that he wants nothing to do with the day to day of the club. That leaves space for a "fuck off and leave me alone" top executive. Shit, that trait is probably preferable to someone who wants nothing to do with the sports side of things.

But going with the cozy, traditional Armstrong probably feels safer for Rogers than a psychopath like Gillis.

I buy them going in the direction of Lombardi over Gillis though. I don't think Lombardi is nearly as traditional as Armstrong though.

I definitely could see a younger, greener analytically driven GM type to complement a president tho. Sounds like they are hiring two people here, not one.

Thats my expectation. Senior (citizen) executive who is data driven but speaks Rogers corporatese, and a day to day manager fully fluent in modern nerd.
