Tom Gilbert leads all NHL d-men in . . .

MB has done a fine job overall but you seem to be suggesting that he can't be criticized for any of his moves as a result thereof. That's not how things work.

The guy has played a whole 6 games for this team. New line mates . New city. Also playing for the biggest pressure cooker in the NHL. I thing just maybe it takes more than 6 games. He plays pretty offensive so im sure his mistakes will be more than normal. I say it takes more than 6 games to make a thread like this.

I hope this is the case but . . . he was bought out just two summers ago by Minny (when they were still bad) and the Panthers just let him walk (and they are still bad). I'm not optimist, as MT would probably say.

In all fairness to the "fancy stat posters": in much the same way as Moneyball disspelled the myth that a players defensive abilities outweigh OBP, thus wins & losses, IMO there's some truth to the similar in Gilbert-gate. The real data measure will be Gilbert's 1 & out pass from the D-zone increasing possession time/negating potential scoring chances vs his turnovers creating scoring chances.

I agree with Habsy, in that Gilbert should be a 3rd pairing D-man on this team, but will be interesting to see what data will reveal as the season progresses.

... There is also something to be said about a player (Gorges) who can only smash the puck off the boards or dump it in the corner. Gorges gave away possession with regularity in that regard. I am not sure if those types of plays are considered "giveaways" because they are "dump ins" or "Clear outs", but he was a very "safe player".

I know many of you are not big fans, but I am far from ready to give up on Beaulieu. He has natural talent and has yet to spend a full season in the NHL.

You could be very well correct. He could be a bust. But way to early

I view the Gilbert signing, as Bergevin having a focus on improving the Habs puck possession game this season, without all the pomp & circumstance of a PC naming a stat czar for the org etc.. like the Make Beliefs. All 3-players acquired in the off-season have one common theme, they are puck possession friendly.

- Parenteau's trend is to skate the puck into the offensize zone rather than dump at the blueline
- Malhotra's faceoff skill set is to gain valuable puck possession time
- Gilbert's trend is 1-pass & out from the Dzone, as opposed to dumping out of the Dzone (let alone the ability to man the point on the PP)

His buy out from Minny was more for cap reasons (he had two more years at $4M). While I don't mind him, that type of contract makes him quite expendable.

And Gilbert was still playing over 21 minutes a game in Florida. They decided to get rid of most of their veterans and go with youth. Still, when you find a defensemen for 2.7M on the free market, you can't expect a stud.

My understanding is that fancy stats were a very important part of the Chicago organization so this doesn't surprise me.

Speaking of which, I've been very pleased with Parenteau so far. He might not be great defensively or especially strong in the corner but he's a savvy offensive player that makes his line better by making smart play and having a knack to find open ice.

I would NEVER dump shit for brains, just use his "hype" from draft placement for trade advantage.

Great point.

Never thought of it that way.

I think I might have rather kept Gorges than Emelin, but essentially we could only afford one of the 2, both in terms of money and in terms of having guys who aren't great at carrying the puck. With our 2 best D prospects also left handed, we opted for the hard hitting guy over the positional guy.

Gilbert isn't great. I don't expect a star for that price. And yes, he would be better suited as a 3rd pair guy, or at the very least as a #4. Our biggest problem is that we only really have 2 defensemen better than him - Emelin/Gilbert work a lot better as the #4 and #5 on your team than the #3 and #4 that they are now.

*cough* Beaulieu *cough*

At some point unrealized potential has limited trade value such as the Isles getting little in return for Nino , if you arent going to play him or fit into your longterm plans pull the trigger and make a bigger deal or for a similar kid who may need a change of scenery .Philly is desperate for D , they are loaded with young forwards.

Gorges was a pure salary dump , an old 30 , undersized and brings zero offence to the table and other blocking some shots , MB realized that 4 mil x 4 more years for his skill set was bad money longterm . If we has making 2.5 x 2 more years he wasnt going anywhere and we would of dumped others to offset PK`s massive increase and help us in the cap department .

We need a Sidenberg and Boychuk on this team big time. TG hasnt been that bad , not as if he has cost us games .

Well said.

Should also keep in mind the exchange is Gorges for Gilbert + 1.1M in cap space. Now, Gilbert is just adequate (i.e. don't totally screw up) and he still has some offensive talent.

It's Weaver who needs to sit.

I'd venture to say that we need Beaulieu more than we need one of their young forwards. It's not like we have a lot of puck moving defensemen in the pipeline. On the other hand we have quite a bit of forwards.

Correction : Gorges for Gilbert + 1.1M in cap space + a likely high 2nd round pick in 2016

Agreed but highly doubt this team will give him a shot at full time duty in a role that suits him and not a 6-7th depth filler . My only thing is he might flourish in another city

I don't think that's true, it's just a case of bringing them slowly. You don't get used in place of a regular in the playoffs if the organization don't view you highly. Him and Tinordi are pretty much on the same schedule. Last year they were #8-9 defensemen in the org. This year they are 6-7. At the beginning of this season Tinordi looked like the guy on the way out. Beaulieu played 4 games to start the year and then Tinordi got a game (no way he was going to sit more than 5 in a row) and did pretty good so now it's Beaulieu's turn to sit. We all knew that going in the season that Tinordi and Beaulieu would be in and out of the lineup until an injury happens. There is no issues, this is all part of the normal plan. This is a long season, and an even longer career, lots of things can happen down the road. They need Beaulieu to be ready to be a top 4 player in 3 years when Markov retires, they're going slowly with him (and Tinordi) and until those two takes their spots on the team, it won't be given to them, which is the right thing to do IMO.
