Staal the elder is not getting traded. Good,hockey players his size, especially ones that can play center are not found growing on trees.
Semin,mine canes best bet would be to play to his strengths and not try to fit a square peg in a round hole.
Is he like skinner and wants the puck all the time? Or does he want to slip to the right side the ice, get a pass and either play setup man or sniper?

There have been some recent tweets about the responsibility Peters has in getting Semin to raise his game. While I generally think Peters is off to a good start, there is some validity in the point.
Semin has always been a bit of a floater (in and out of effort) but even when he hasn't really tried in the past he puts up goals. He is too talented to not accidentally score or pick up points from time to time. He is currently performing at a pace that is WAY below any year he has ever had in NHL. Something is wrong here and it needs to be solved. Is most of it on Semin...probably, but there are likely other factors here and clicking with the coach seems to be a big one.
