Nylander was absolutely right to hold out. He got a terrific deal that the leafs simply didn't offer earlier. But the agent knew dubas couldn't let the guy sit out so he held firm, especially on a clear market value offer. Bravo to him.
Both sides won, I think.

Dubas manged to sign Willy to a long term deal at under $7M. Considering Pastrnak's deal, adjusted to today's cap value is $7.1M AAV, and that deal is now a bargain by today's market value, then Dubas did very well here actually.

Nylander's camp OTOH, got compensated for the lost games in this season, and manages to get from Dubas's initial offer of $6.5M to almost $7M, that's a small victory in that too.

But I think by holding out to the last day, this is a definitive victory for Dubas because think of what Marner and Matthews' agents are going to think next summer? They definitely don't want to drag it out knowing they won't get much of an advantage for holding out.

He's probably somewhere in between ehlers and pastrnak and his cap hit adjusting for cap inflation is in between as well. Although IMO neither ehlers nor pastrnak did great in their deals. Ehlers signed for one too many years and pastrnak could have done better.

But Willy still got market value overall. If marner gets over 10 and Matty 12-13, they may eventually have to trade him but whatever, the dube will do well in any trade for him.

only 7 more years of Price's contract. The hope is, he can match the numbers Sparks has produced this season.

There was no ****ing way The Doob was going to make us withstand years of trolling over this.

Exactly. Plus I don't think the Matthews contract talks will drag out like this, and with Marner there's no way he wants to go through this sitting around in the GTA next year.

It's a win-win. The agent/Nylander save face over their holdout and The Dube gets us almost exactly what was needed (wanted 7 years).

Yup, like I said. Win-win. Big win for Dubas, small victory for the agent recovering the lost salary this season in first 20 games, and also getting a big signing bonus so he gets paid more up front. ($24M I read)

There is a massive signing bonus coming next Canada Day which, after the Leafs pay that will make him a great trade target *if* they felt they wanted to or needed to.

@PierreVLeBrun

Any way you look at it, while it’s a crummy experience sitting out two months, when you consider the Leafs were at 6 x 6 at the start of the season and desperately didn’t want to go above 6.5 for the longest time, the ordeal was well worth it financially for Nylander.

Dubas caved, Gross won....and they were both in the right.
