Winter Olympics Hockey Thread

So serious question here, as you guys on this board have a lot more hockey experience than I do. It seems to me as watching the games that Slavin is being very un-Slavin like. Like he's being underutilized by the coach, or maybe still not 100%? I just remember the commentators at the 4 Nations raving about him and now I hardly ever hear them mention him.

Meh … he’s still a little slow on the turns, but he’s still Slavin. He’s been fine. I think the coaching staff know he’s not quite up to speed so they shift him out for Hanifin for a few shifts a period. And remember, the commentators don’t matter. Especially when it’s Olczyk

Decent effort from the US. Big hit to Sweden having Hedman get hurt in warmups since they couldn’t replace him. Getting stuck with Hampus Lindholm in his slot instead of Rasmus Andersson took away an option in OT if nothing else. And I can’t for the life of me figure out why the Swedish coach seems to have decided that his 13th forward and his 7th D have to be nailed to the bench. Bratt was huge for them in the 3rd when he finally remembered he was on the bench. Meh. Not my problem, but if this US team has a real weakness other than sketchy scoring, it’s defending speed. And yet again, I’m stuck wondering just why the heck Jason Robertson is sitting at home with 32 NHL goals this season.

Just an Olympics observation with a Canes twist but Necas had an amazing Olympic Games and his dynamic offensive talents have really blossomed more than ever. I usually am pretty on board with most Canes decisions as it relates to letting guys go and understanding the reasons why but this guy simply was never fully allowed here to just let it rip and be himself offensively. I know a lot of it was Rod and the defensive responsibilities he expected from Necas that never was there at times with the player but that kind of gifted skill doesn’t come around often and I just wish they could have found a way to make it work because he is fun to watch with the puck.

How does that get missed? I know that a lot of times the opposing team's bench will bang on the boards and scream to get the officials attention, but that didn't seem to happen here.

Note to the NHL, if 'too many men' is not eligible for a coach's challenge review then this would be a good time to get with the NHLPA and fix that hole immediately.

LeBrun asked the IIHF about Czechia scoring with 6 skaters on the ice. Note that 3 officials in the game were NHL officials, referee Chris Rooney and linesmen David Brisebois and Jonny Murray. Based on the response LeBrun got, they might be done for the tournament,

What a loss to the tournament it would be if Chris Rooney and Jonny Murray got sent home early … I’m sorry, but I almost broke my keyboard laughing when I typed that. Lolololololololol.

Too many men is traditionally the responsibility of the linesmen, but any official can call it. The fact that all four refs missed it is a statement of general lack of quality, and it’s not like they haven’t been getting a steady stream of red flags on that issue for roughly a decade now. Maybe getting embarrassed on an international stage will finally get the NHL to start doing something about the problem, even with the full knowledge that any solutions will be a long time coming to fruition.

Aho was moved to 1C between Lehkonen and the guy from Dallas at practice today.

They’ve gone to that line combo during games a few times in the tournament, but waiting until now to make it permanent is … bonkers. Hintz has been borderline terrible at times in this tournament and I’m not sure I wouldn’t swap him with Lundell or Louie at this point. Aho ain’t Barkov but he’s a darned site closer to that level than Hintz.

Rantanen hasn't exactly covered himself in glory in these Olympics. I definitely expected more production from him (I'm sure the Finns did too).

Yeah, he’s feeling the weight of expectations to step up with Barkov out, I think. Having Aho going full tilt boogey all the time next to him might help snap him out of it a bit. Also, with Finland’s setup, there’s very little opportunity for him to play on the break. Open ice has been hard to come by. One thing with Rantanen … he’s a weirdly sensitive beast and he kind of needs success to feed off of.
