2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

That would be my vote, for sure. We took on Fox as a make-weight in a trade, not because he fit an organizational need. Flipping him for somebody who does fit an organizational need would feel like winning ... even if it really isn't.

Nedeljkovic was named AHL goalie of the month and Helvig was named ECHL goalie of the week.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

So two teams spurned without playing a single game in the league, as much as you can say it’s his right to choose, overall it smells bad and looks worse.

The only difference between what Fox is doing and what Elynuik did last year (or Shane Willis did to Tampa many years ago) is that junior players are forced back into the draft. If they don’t get drafted, they’re free agents. It’s a bargained right. At least we know early enough to make a deal, unlike what Blake Wheeler did to Arizona.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Taking a stroll around Hockey Twitter last night it seemed like the general feeling of the quality reporters is that the Canes should be able to salvage a 2nd rounder or the equivalent out of a deal for Fox's rights ... so long as we're willing to let Fox's people (parents, lawyer ... no agent because he's in college) negotiate with the target club. And naturally everyone seems to lean towards the Rangers. Apparently the Rangers organizational depth on D is bad enough that they supposedly would be willing to play ball with a trade. As MacKenzie points out ... if you can't make a deal now, that doesn't mean you can't make one later. And maybe one of the NY Metro teams gets more desperate between now and a year from now.

The Canes with a first rounder and a pair of second round picks already in the cupboard, I'd prefer Waddell and company to see if they would part with a forward prospect instead of another second rounder in a trade for the kid. If you look what the Rags have in the system, they are fairly deep with forwards. Brett Howden is a defensive-minded center that is not considered one of their top 3 prospects that would make some sense in a trade for Fox.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Yeah ... honestly, a decent prospect or a 2nd rounder. Either way would work. Just get something of value and I think Carolina is fine. They took a risk, it didn't pay off big ... so now you make it pay off small.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Right, make a trade to get Fox to where he wants to sign and be done with this lying piece of crap.

Hey kid, word of advice. Man up next time rather than lying via the media about your intention which was always to force yourself to the Rangers.

Meanwhile...the Checkers are still rolling towards the playoffs

Mar 27 @Bridgeport W 4-0. Ned with the 23 save shutout. Poturalski x2, Brown and Nastasiuk with the goals
Mar 29 @Hartford W 4-1 Tokarski with the win. Saarela, Gauthier, Mattheos and Geekie with the goals.
Mar 30 @Bridgeport L 2-1. Ned with the loss. Gauthier with the goal

4 home games this week. Tue/Wed vs. Lehigh Valley and Sat/Sun vs. Springfield.

Checkers clinched their division and are on the cusp of clinching the best record in the Eastern conference. Gauthier has been hot and is now 3rd on the team with 22 goals (Poturalski has 23, Saarela 25).

Eetu Luostarinen was named to Finland’s World Championship team roster. It’s not the final roster though, the tournament doesn’t start until May 10.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Jack Johnson, Adam Fox...

Shy of being the Rangers, my understanding is that Carolina has repeatedly tried to sign Fox and has made repeated overtures. Trade Fox to the team he wants. If he garners a return like Gleason, then good for us- only because a reliable, serviceable, physical player is better than a prospect or pick you hope develops.

I forgot about him and went looking:
Eetu Luostarinen has been very impressive in the Hurricanes' prospects development camp this past week.
The 2017 second-round pick out of Finland has tremendous offensive updside that he displayed by scoring on a behind-the-back, between-the-legs shot in a two-on-two drill this week during the Hurricanes' prospects development camp. If you haven't seen the goal, it's worth a look on YouTube. Luostarinen will not play in the AHL this season, but will instead, return to KalPa of the SM Liga. He might be a factor in 2020, so keep an eye on him.

Just FWIW, the general feeling among reporters seems to be that Carolina will most likely get a draft pick in return for Fox if they can finesse a move her relatively soon. He's well regarded, but not the kind of prospect that Johnson was out of Michigan, so we're not going to be getting any king of proven NHLer in return.

We need an All-Spurned Team...Freddy Andersen in goal, Jack Johnson and Adam Fox on D...who am I forgetting?
