Where does 5 million put him in GM salaries? Was that just too much $ to turn down? Seattle would have been a better job.
Seattle probably wants someone modern

I feel like Holland is the exact sort of move they should have avoided. Its basically the same outdated hire they have always made except he never won a cup in the 80's with Edmonton. Calling him an upgrade on Chia is pointless as anyone is. Also if this hire doesnt come with launching Nicholson into the sun then its really pointless. Hes the big issue and i totally buy that those two crave Babcock
How about someone good?
Holland is the sort of move they should have avoided....sort of. The one thing he brings with him is enough cache to do whatever the **** he wants. He might be ideologically aligned with the old boys club, but anywhere he sees the need for departure, there will be departure. As grim as this is, the way the Wings have been run for the last 5-7 years is a massive upgrade from the way the Oilers have been run. One thing Holland's Wings were good at, is drafting/developing of secondary talent to put around their studs. If you look at 2007-2016:
121st - Nyqvist
60th - Tatar
150th - Jensen
51st - Jarnkrok
141st - Mrazek
110 - Athanasiou
58th - Bertuzzi
79th - Janmark
20th - Mantha
15th - Larkin
53rd - Hronek
Now, I know he doesn't have the same scouts working for him, but their overall focus on speed and skill will pull way more talent out of the draft than whatever it is Edmonton has been doing. My only question is whether or not Connor will be willing to stick around long enough for it to matter. Hockey people will gush over this move, but Connor McDavid was like 10-11 years old the last time the Red Wings made it past the 2nd round.

Spector threw out he may seek permission to speak to Babcock if he is hiredSignificance?
I don’t get the Sask reference.
To this point they may be looking for a known commodity to appease CMD.

They are in win desperation mode right now , this will get fugly
It could. Their best bet is to flog all the crap (Gagner, Brodziak, Sekera, Russell) even if it means eating some salary to get it done and replacing them with two different player types. Young guys with strong possession numbers and a bit of skill (the Josh Leivo's of the world), and older guys with wheels who will come cheap/cheapish (Hagelin, etc) and just try to build a forward lineup with enough speed and possession ability to allow Connor and Leon to carry you.
On the blueline, skating and puck moving. Pray this Bouchard kid is ready and do your best to trade your scraps for guys who can move the puck but appear to be out of favour like Colin Miller. Basically, they have to roll the dice on a couple enigmas being what the advanced numbers suggest they are, and they need some veterans with wheels who can play a bit of hockey, push the pace, kill penalties, etc.
At the same time, you need to gamble on a 1B to play behind this shitty starter Chia signed as his final "**** you" to the organization. Something like Elliott, who hopefully can put up a .910 or better in 30-40 games. Maybe Koskinen is more 1st half Koskinen rather than 2nd half Koskinen if he's in a proper tandem and is only playing when he's running hot.
Yes but he’s a known name to sell to season ticket holders. The Panthers are milking Quenneville’s hiring to STH.
I think Gretzky did not get the job because that would not have excited the fanbase enough. They needed a big name.
One of Holland's biggest jobs will be finding a Dubas/McCrimmond. Its not a one man job, and Holland has a history of hiring good people. Had Nill for years, and left the Wings to Stevie Y.
But that organization is such a mess. The problems there are way deeper than who to draft with the 8th pick and how to dump Lucic. They need to rebuild the entire organization so it can actually serve the team on the ice. A guy who led an all time great organization for 20 years will be good for them, and will likely leave the organization in a better state than when he found it. Which is something no Oilers GM has done in decades.
that Koskinen contract will never cease to make me chuckle.
also love the characterization of it as a final "**** you" to the Oilers. brilliant.
oh Peter
