2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Goalie Eetu Mäkiniemi, taken in the 4th round of the same draft as Eetu Luostarinen.

Speaking of Eetu the goalie, it appears that he has landed a regular Lliga gig with Ilves Tampere for the 19-20 season after spending most of last year not playing very much for Kiekko-Vantaa of Mestis where he had been loaned by Jokerit of the KHL who apparently had no roster spot for him. Hopefully the kid will get a chance to compete in a top league for the first time this season. Goaltending was a big problem for that team last season.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

There's a reason that in the playoff threads I was on a first name basis with Saku Mäenalanen... it's a lot easier to type "Saku gets called for another penalty" than copy and paste his last name and remembering where the umlauts are placed. If Eetu makes his way to the big club, it'll probably be the same thing... although don't we have another Eetu in the system? (Too lazy to look right now.)

Board rule ... hard and fast so far as I'm concerned ... screw umlauts ... and tildes over Ns while we're at it.

If you’re not interested in schlepping to Charlotte for the Calder Cup Finals, all games will be broadcast on NHL Network.

Caveat ... make sure to check the start times. IRRC the first two games start at 6 PM Eastern

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

and Games 1 and 4 are on delay until next day.

Suuuper helpful NHL Network. I think I saw that Chicago was going to have the games broadcast on their regional network, so you might be able to find it on satellite if that's an option for anyone.

Checkers blew a 3-1 lead in the second, and no one has scored since... first Overtime in progress.

Checkers played one good period then looked like shit for the most part. No one stood out and the Checkers D hung Ned out to dry on the two second period goals.

Good start by the boys, but that Wolves team is experienced and they didn't panic. Cherkers REALLY need to take care of the puck better in Game 2. When I've seen them play well this season, they've been deadly in transition but it's tough to do that when you have to go the full length of the ice all night. Details, boys ... details.

Forgot ... Carolina let 2017 6th round pick Brendan DeJong’s rights expire, as we suspected would be the case. He will return to the 2019 draft pool.

My daughter saw him play a couple of times in Portland. She said he was very tall.

De Jong is unlikely to be redrafted in my opinion. My best guess would be he ends up playing for a college in Canada.

Well, it worked for Derek Ryan...De Jong just needs Mike Johnston to get another NHL job.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Cherkers take Game 2, 5-3.

Better effort from the Checkers. They took better care of the puck and put together two strong periods before the Wolves got going for real. They went with Tokarski in net, but they've flipped between him and Ned a few times this post season, so don't read too much into that. Roy's line was good, and both Jurco and Necas stood out to me. Good effort, although I could have done without Brown igniting a near brawl with a hard check with a second left in the game. Yeah, the Wolves were the baddies as some clown wailed away on Steve Lorenz while he was prone and defenseless, but you really don't need your Captain delivering a "message hit" that late in a game you've got wrapped up. Whatever. It's the minors and stuff happens.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Necas had a late chance to beat the goalie right in front of the crease. It would have given me more of a warm fuzzy about him, but alas.

Fair ... but that dish to Jurco on the game winner was sweet and he showed all those slippery moves. I like him a lot better out wide playing wing. Dude is seriously hard to stay in front of.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

I've been following this series and Cherkers p-offs (since we got swept) and Necas is really our best prospect right now. He shows regular flashes of NHL caliber skills (speed, plays, vision, etc)

Oh and idk what the deal is with Jurco, but he wouldn't look bad on either or 3rd or 4th lines. I'd take him over Saku any day.

Depends on what you're asking the guy to do. We ask Maenalanen to grind, win board battles, check and be a physical presence ... none of which Jurco really does. He's a creative playmaker with wiggle but he's had 200 NHL games with the Wings and Blackhawks to show he can play a depth role in the NHL and he just hasn't done it. Frustratingly, he's a guy who's ceiling is being a really good AHLer. Chris Terry anyone?

And yeah ... I do think Necas is the only high end offensive prospect in Charlotte right now, although I like the all purpose games I see from Geekie and Matthios. If Foegele can play in the NHL ... and he can ... then so can those guys. And I absolutely think both Brown and Bishop can handle 4th line NHL duty.
