Habs Offer Sheet for Aho

it probably means he signed it to stop the negotiation with the Canes since he was happy with the terms. I'm sure he loves all the up front money.

Bergevin's quote was "Sebastian Aho accepted our offer. So he wants to come to Montreal.” That's just GM speak. Means nothing.

That is 100% correct. It's just GM speak, but that won't stop it from doing a fair amount of damage to Aho's standing in this market just the same. If he ends up sticking around, you can bet that every time he has a rough shift or whiffs on a shot some people will be bellowing about how "since wants to be in Montreal so much, why don't we let him." Absolutely guaranteed. It's all just business but we all know that means nothing in the stands a lot of the time.

Now NOWAY, anywhere but Montreal! How 'bout Edmonton for Draisadl? Or Winnipeg for Laine? I know, I'm just pissy right now.

Be pissy if we end up with Ned and Reimer as our goalie tandem. This issue will resolve itself, one way or the other.

Basically, Aho's camp just forced our hand for a 5 year term (vs. longer). We can't come back and sign him to a 7 year deal at same cap hit (or higher)---the structure is what we live with, right?

Aye... and IIUC If we sign him we can not trade him for a year. I'm a bit shocked that Aho + agent went this way... But it gets him his 5 yr deal...
and #$@# I hate how Bonus structures can #$@# over smaller market teams... though I don't think it's a "real" issue for Dundon... but I do expect him (Dundon) to remember this...

This is the real down side for Carolina, who clearly wanted to lock Aho in for a longer term than 5 years or for a shorter term when they could try and weather an arbitration award. The first year roster lock is a non-issue and the signing bonus money is an annoyance. The real pain comes in year 5 when you have to re-sign him at whatever market rate looks like then ... or in year 4 when you decide you have to trade him because re-signing him isn't good value.

I'm sorry but I have to say I'm utterly disappointed in Aho. I expected more from him, but I also realize much of all this is down to his agent. But still, Aho is determined to be UFA as soon as possible. This ensures he is a Cane for at most the next five seasons.

Montreal would have been better off targeting Brayden Point with an offer sheet. Tampa is jammed up with high dollar long term deals to their top players and I think Tampa would have had a tougher time matching. I guess Bergy loves Aho much more than Point.

Right ... for clarity, the compensation from Montreal should Carolina decide not to match the offer sheet is a 1st round pick, a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick ... since Aho's contract offer is $8.4-whatever million per season. All picks have to be the team's own picks and have to be available in the 2020 draft.

I don't begrudge Aho anything. We really have very little idea what he's thinking for five years down the road, and I'll assess him at that time if it's possible. Maybe he's just confident in his abilities and confident that in five years he'll be able to score an 8-year deal with the Canes for a few more mil a year because the cap will be that much higher. I'm not going to dump on a guy's character when we really know very little about him.

I’m with you on this, I don’t get the hate or “Aho has a stink on him now” comments. It’s just the business of hockey these days, and it happens on both sides. You can hate on the Canes for what they just did to de Haan as easily on the other side of the coin for trashing Aho for signing the offer sheet.

P.S. Go sign a f$&@?ng starting goalie now!

It's kinda true. Ultimately it means... "he accepted the offer, so he's willing to play in Montreal for $8.4m a year."

how often do guys turn down offer sheets? (the player does not sign) Maybe if they are turned down they are never made public unless leaked.

Teams are allowed to speak to UFA and RFA the week running up to July 1. They cannot negotiate official contracts but they can feel out the player's demands and they can say that an offer is coming without detailing numbers.

Thanks, Habsy!

FWIW, while I am not a fan of offer sheets, I do think they stir up stuff quite a bit and can be fun to watch. Nothing better was the gasket Brian Burke blew on that Penner offer sheet. That being said, Dundon et al would be fools to let Aho go-- no way the three draft picks are going to be worth as much as this player, especially as MTL gets better. Hell, they were chasing us until the last part of the season for the playoffs.
