it probably means he signed it to stop the negotiation with the Canes since he was happy with the terms. I'm sure he loves all the up front money.
Bergevin's quote was "Sebastian Aho accepted our offer. So he wants to come to Montreal.” That's just GM speak. Means nothing.
Now NOWAY, anywhere but Montreal! How 'bout Edmonton for Draisadl? Or Winnipeg for Laine? I know, I'm just pissy right now.
Basically, Aho's camp just forced our hand for a 5 year term (vs. longer). We can't come back and sign him to a 7 year deal at same cap hit (or higher)---the structure is what we live with, right?
Hypothetical... If Dondon doesn't match, is Aho worth three first round picks?

I'm sorry but I have to say I'm utterly disappointed in Aho. I expected more from him, but I also realize much of all this is down to his agent. But still, Aho is determined to be UFA as soon as possible. This ensures he is a Cane for at most the next five seasons.
I don't begrudge Aho anything. We really have very little idea what he's thinking for five years down the road, and I'll assess him at that time if it's possible. Maybe he's just confident in his abilities and confident that in five years he'll be able to score an 8-year deal with the Canes for a few more mil a year because the cap will be that much higher. I'm not going to dump on a guy's character when we really know very little about him.

Teams are allowed to speak to UFA and RFA the week running up to July 1. They cannot negotiate official contracts but they can feel out the player's demands and they can say that an offer is coming without detailing numbers.
