The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

He was so bad offensively this year though. Playoffs especially.

You can't just have a guy shutting down and providing zip at the other end. If he's going to be on the ice for as long as Marchand and Bergeron are, then that's a 20+ minute center who is a void in the O zone. I just don't have the trust that what we just saw isn't what he'd provide as he slides into his 30s.

I'd need to take a deeper dive because it could be bad luck but Tatar's career playoff stats are hilarious

They're turrible.

I'm a firm subscriber to the "it's short term luck" theory though. Just too many examples of guys not producing in the playoffs over long portions of their career going apeshit for a year or two and then back to meh. Or guys who are playoff studs early in the their career losing it mid and late career, etc. Feels like a massive bucket of random.

Let's not add proven playoff duds then. Why should we gamble? Go after quality, and even the bargain guys, outbid by a little to get the best ones.

As long as the player's nerdies don't consistently take a nosedive in the playoffs I agree with ME in banking on it being bad luck.

Tatar has been mothballed in the playoffs by his last two employers... which has suppressed his value for the next team that takes a flyer on him

I was originally on team Stastny and wouldn't shed a single tear if we ended up there instead but Bonino is younger, 2 time cup winner (Leaderbeans!!) good nerdies in hard usage and surprising offensive production despite starting almost every shift on his side of the red line.

Schwartz also has some cup winning leader beans, very nice defensive metrics- and an offensive skillset that could easily rebound with more talented linemates.

Bonino + Schwartz for $6.5m and I'm pretty happy.

You were happy with Foligno and Nash tho.

A few years ago, you were happy with Plekanec.

TL DR; When I grow up I want to be as consistently happy as Zeke

None of those guys were the reason we lost. In fact, We played pretty well with all of them.

I really do think it's random...

Just off of that St Louis cup winner

Jaden Schwartz: 7 points in his first 3 playoff appearances (18 games), 43 points in his next 3 (57 games), 4 points in his last 2 (13 games)
David Perron: First 7 playoff appearances - 4 goals in 57 games, 11 in his last 33 games.

2 guys who had been consistent playoff disappointments until they weren't (and then maybe are again....)

Small sample madness.

Yeah, I wouldn't complain with anyone from that list of LW we've thrown around for cheap. Bringing in Schwartz and Bonino leaderbeans could be big in a way that the alleged leaderbeans we've brought in (Marleau, Thornton, Simmonds, etc) can't be. The fuck do they know about winning the whole thing?
