2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Old Dave Keon meet the new Dave Keon...except this time with no winning or legendary playoff performances

Keon was also definitely wronged by the organization too and had legitimate grievances to go along with the petty ones. Ballard was a bastard.

As opposed to Mitch who, aside from a few instances of him being treated like shit by Babcock and Lamoriello not giving him all possible bonuses on his ELC, has had the organization bent over backwards for him and coddling him at every turn.

This Marner situation is pretty incredible. Local kid just totally willing to set his legacy here on fire. He must be extremely sour on the city if he won't even engage with the team. Will be interesting if some team gives him $14M+ on a 4 year deal (as rumoured so he can maximize career earnings) with all the NMC shit. Not a hard pill to swallow if you don't give up any assets to sign him I guess. Then he'll bend that team over in 4 years.

Its been this for a long time though. His first negotiation told us most of what we needed to know about his priorities. He only cared about being the local kid as far as Ferris was able to use it to bend Dubas over.

And its cool, get your money kid. But thats when fans should stop feeling all warm and fuzzy about the location he popped out of a vagina.

Is it the ballsy, and highest upside route to gut it out and finish your career as the top scorer all time for an original 6 franchise, win a cup and live out your childhood dreams? Obviously.

Do I expect Marner to take the difficult path….

and to be fair...it's not all on Marner. We hired a psychopath, alleged "leader of men" as his first coach and that guy was a complete dick that we kept for too long. We ran him to RFA instead of extending him immediately when we could have, which did put him in the position to do what he did in RFA negotiations because something something "use the time you have". Who knows if any of that would have changed any of the outcome. The organization has also been a clownshow during his time here, but I don't think he's done much of anything to make himself a sympathetic figure in this story either. It's time to call it a day, wish him the best in whatever warm market with no media he goes to and just move forward.

"And that's the word with the peel on it."

(Old saying - often used by "olds." 😊)

At the end of the day this is all on Shanny. to let Marner walk out the door for nothing is as bad as anything all the idiots who came before have done.

He's been giving the organization reasons to trade him since the first contract negotiations tbh. Letting it get to his NMC kicking in was malpractice, letting it get this far is well beyond malpractice.

I still won’t believe it till it happens.

He’d have to be insane to want to leave, unless something insanely bad happened that we don’t know about or the Leafs told him they won’t sign him or only will if there’s a huge discount.

Or just not who you think he is.
Because it’s too crazy to think this guy got his wish, has been here with all his buddies for almost a decade, could reach the top of all time lists, has a great team that he could help win it, made an absolute fortune already, and has a young family and would just uproot and leave it all behind.

I mean, it's pretty obvious that he hasn't loved his time here and has been money motivated both times he's had contracts come up for negotiation. This honestly doesn't surprise anyone here other than you mate.

I don't believe the reports he won't talk to the Leafs again. That makes 0 business sense. He's definitely talking to them soon.

Yup, he's going to take his best offer back to the team and try to get that (tax equalized, of course) at 8 years.

Dude wants to get paid first, everything else second. Which is cool, can't fault him for that, but I want absolutely nothing to do with him on a market rate deal. Small, soft, pass first winger who has shown little willingness to do the things necessary to justify his salary in the playoffs. Can't win with that guy, so why bother continuing to try to?

I'm going to resist the urge to blame anything other than what he did here on him, but I don't think he was part of the solution here going forward either, culturally or on the ice.
